Tom, I hope you did not experiment with gold? My mom's colleague lost her wedding ring after having it in contact with mercury.
Millet, thank you for the advise! The seed went to a pot this morning and I hope for the best. I have no mercury anyway. What is interesting, after soaking in water overnight, the outer shell cracked revealing many (ten?) embryo. I hope to see a green guy in couple weeks.
Darkman, I hope too that Dekopons will be available in a few years. Meanwhile, I'm gonna try growing it from a seed... |

A found another seed 3-4 weeks ago and it had 2-3 embryos but they are albino like the ones I had two years ago and will most likely face the same fate. _________________ Harvey |

So far ok...
Has sprouted a few days ago. Hopefully, the seedling will stay green and happy... assuming that nothing will eat it. |

Ryan,
Thanks! If I succeed with it, you are welcome for budwood in 5-7 years. I hope it stays green and happy but it is still looooong way to go. What intrigues me is that, when planting the seeds, it had 5 or more embryos. Guess, other 4 decided not showing up, right? |

After eating quite a few Dekopons(Sumo), I was fortunate to find a few seeds. I immediately planted them and each seed produced 4-5 sprouts, some more vigorous than others. Does anyone know if these are all "true" or is it only a certain percentage? If all goes well, I will graft these onto dwarf rootstocks. _________________ Enjoy growing dwarf citrus indoors&outdoors. Nice seedlings Nicky! Let them grow a couple of inches, so you can find the odd one easier. If I am right (at least it's the case with sweet orange), only one of the embryos is a result of cross-pollination. Therefore, one of the seedlings won't grow true to type, while the other ones will. It's usually the seedlings' phenotype which helps you determine the odd one.
Best,
Igor |

nicky,
great job! I'm officially jealous now with my single seed and a tiny seedling!
Good luck! |

Thanks for the support. Did your dekopon sprout multiple seedings when planted? I was surprised to have so many sprouts from each seed. But believe me, we consummed a lot of fruit to locate those seeds. It was the "thrill of the hunt". One fruit has two seeds then nothing for a while. Weeks later again another few seeds. I tryed to look at the exterior fruit before peeling to see if there were any physical signs to determine if it had any seeds. Could not find a clue. _________________ Enjoy growing dwarf citrus indoors&outdoors. Currently learning to graft. |

If you don't want to wait 8 to 10+ years for a seedling Dekopon to finally become mature and begin to fruit, buy a mature Dekopon tree now. For members that do not live in a Citrus producing state, you can purchase mature Dekopon (Shiranui) trees from Harris Citrus, a Florida grower. The trees should start producing some fruit next Spring. I recently purchased 3 Dekopon trees, along with two more Xie Shan Satsumas from them. Ask for Ruth. - Millet |

Here is my little guy. for a fruit that from what I understand is said to be seedless, it sure seems quite a few people are finding them now.
Millet,
I plan to get a mature one asap. I just enjoy seedlings. Did you pay a reasonable price for them?

Hi Mike,
You can't go wrong with Harris. They are primarily a supplier for commercial citrus grove growers. Their trees are ready to take off and grow. I purchased four Xie Shan from them and they came in the deep pots. They were half the size of my other citrus purchased in the three gallon pots. Now they have caught and in some cases surpassed the others. Excellent product and very fair prices.
You won't be dissapointed. _________________ Charles in Pensacola

nicky,
no, my seed only produced (so far) a single seedling. I saw 4 or 5 embryos when planting the seed though. Perhaps, a few more may pop-up later?
Yeah, I wish I could buy a plant... |

mksmith, I'm sorry but I can't tell you the price of my Dekopon and Xie Shan trees from Harris Citrus. I never looked, nor did I ask what the price was, and failed to look at the enclosed packing slip for the paper work. I had them sent to Colorado from Florida via UPS 2nd day air. The air freight was $150.00 (or $30.00 per tree). My guess for the trees themselves is perhaps $40.00/tree +-. - Millet |
