I believe Sumo and Dekopon are one in the same.

Citrus Joe must be playing Santa.
I got one from him today as well. I thought it was very good to excellent.
I have never had ponkan but my favorite citrus has been Minneola tangelo. I think Sumo is a close second place for me.

Yes, Laaz, the LA times article says "Sumo" is how depokon is marketed in the US.

Yes, according to the LA Times article, Sumo is just the marketing name. Seems like a catchy name that will help them make good money.

My friend bought some more today and has yet to find a single seed so I think it's safe to say that eBay seller is a fraud.

From what I've heard, I believe that Dekopon must be a good tasting fruit, as are many mandarins. I would be REALLY SURPRISED if it matches a Xie Shan. - Millet (683-)

Millet,

Are your Xie Shan green when ripe or orange? I hope mine will taste as good as yours as I ordered four Xie Shan today. They will be the first of my new citrus garden. The Dekopon is not available here.

Xie Shan turns orange when ripe. Like most Satsumas, they are seedless and very easily peeled. Both of my Xie Shan trees, are inside my greenhouse, so the environment is much like the environment in Florida. Xie San is an exceptionally early maturing Satsuma variety. They are the very first to mature, (around mid-September). I believe they should mature about the same time in Florida. - Millet (683-)

Funny. About 2 minutes ago, I just got done reading about Xie Shan in the article at this link:
"Descriptions of new varieties recently distributed from the Citrus Clonal Protection Program"

The interesting thing about Dekopon is that the first article I posted regarding HGTV's visit to UCR indicated that Paul James tased the Dekopan there, but the LA Times Article implied that UCR had cut it down. Citrus Conspiracy??? Smile

So where can I get a Dekopon plant? lol. I read that wikipedia and it caught my eye way before I ever came to this forum. Smile

Edit:

I just bought some Oni Yuzu seeds from that same ebay seller. I don't care if I got duped or anything. Its a fun gamble and only 18 bucks.

Well, I believe this group paid UCR to import and clean up the tree and, perhaps, hold it in quarantine until it was cleared, then their job was done once it was released to this group.

I've heard that Gene Lester did taste it at Lindcove and was not overly impressed, but I'm not sure if this is second hand information or even more removed. Naturally, timing would play a big part in the fruit's evaluation.

The USDA will likely be contacting you, since buying seed from Asia is not legal. They monitor all of this stuff. You really shouldn't buy seeds from Asia anyway.

Mark is right. A guy from a Yahoo rarefruit group in Florida was shocked with a knock at his door a few months ago where USDA uniformed officers arrived. They have a task force that monitors eBay sales. The crazy thing about what he bought was something (I don't remember what it was now) that they were not concerned about the disease spread but it was something on some banned list as it could be used as a drug (or something like that), even though the plant is already grown in parks, etc. in Florida.

If your order hasn't already shipped I would probably write the seller and tell him you learned it was illegal to import citrus seeds into the USA and that your sale should be canceled so that neither of you break the law.

I wish I had thought of mentioning that when the first comments about Dekopon seeds was brought up here.
