Back on topic...

Shocked Shocked Shocked

I was quite surprised to see this at a local garden center today! There were a few of them mixed in w/ all of the normal common stuff (Key limes, Calamondins, Meyers, etc...) that I typically see up here. It looks like they are starting to trickle out of FL through approved nurseries by normal channels. They were asking $90 for their citrus at this size, so in case anyone was wondering, I did not get one.

They also had a few 30 gal Duncan grapefruit trees (I didn't even bother to look for the price Laughing) These were around 8 ft tall (9 ft plus if you include the container). I wonder who in the world would buy one of those here in Massachusetts. We certainly do not have enough summer heat up here...

Ouch! I think that size here is $39.95.

Definately a Florida nursery. Buckhead I think. See the logo. Just can't remember for sure.

Good eyes, it is from Record Buck Farms.

I wonder which other nurseries have the proper screen houses and inspection procedures in place to ship out of FL now.

I believe they are one of the largest producers of citrus trees in FL.

Yeah, normally trees that size are $60 or $70 in the nurseries up here. So $90 is certainly steep.

Although I don't actually know the price of the 3 Dekopon trees that I purchased, they must have been $20.00 per tree, because I purchased mine from the same place Ryan did - Harris Citrus. The freight charge to Colorado was more than the price of the tree. I also purchased 2 Xie Shan mandarins at the same time. I would rate the quality of the Dekopon trees as just OK, but the two Xie Shan were less than OK. I am not actually complaining as they were worth $20 bucks. I have all the new trees on the heat table (80F) and under lights until 10:30 PM. They have already started flushing new growth. The trees should turn out well. - Millet (Rosa Stein d. Aug. 9 1942)

Thanks again for the Dekopon tree Bob. They are a decent size for $20, Mine is also starting to flush. I have mine in a container at the moment as I have to find a good spot to plant it. I think once I get some decent budwood, I am going to graft it to swingle which does excellent in my area.

No one around here carries anything but meyer lemons key limes and maybe a Washington naval. $70 is close to what we see around here for a tree that size and they are nothing special.

You are referring to the size, caliper, overall look right?

You have not changed you mind about the taste of Xie Shan in general have you.

The ones I purchased, same supplier, looked small and leggy. They were probably only a quarter the size of the other Citrus I bought, (JF&E), but they have caught up and in some cases surpassed the larger trees I purchased. This year I have a good crop set and I get to experience the taste.

My Dekopon will be a couple more years. Sad

Darkman, my comments on Xie Shan and Dekopon have nothing to do with taste. Rather the quality of the tree. The stems were crooked, leggy, no taper, and the tops were small.. On the other hand, some of the best citrus trees I've purchased over the years came from Four Season Growers in California. - Millet

Well now. I pretty darn jealous. I am still trying to get a Xie Shan as well as a Dekopon/Shiranui. Just not being propagated anywhere in California. Boo. And, if I could just get my green house squared away, so that I can get more humidity going, I could keep my grafted citrus going. Part of my problem is I just don't keep them moist enough, the grafts dry up and then that's that. It's hard with having my pesky full time job. However, the Golden grapefruit seeds that a couple of forum members sent me are all sprouting. Oddly, the first bunch up were all albinos, it was very odd. They of course have now died off, but the green ones are all doing very well. I need to get to separating them into smaller pots. Laaz, I used your suggestion with MiracleGro Garden Soil, and I also used some Osmocote Plus, and they are doing extremely well. Sadly, I lost a VERY VERY special lemon seedling, as my daughter came to house sit for us, when we were gone in Denver for a week, "over loved" my seedlings, and I lost the lemon seedling as well as the Brown's Select mandarin Sad Sigh. Such is the life of the citrus seed killer.

Laaz, I had three Dekopon trees. As you posted, the one I gave you bloomed a week or so ago, and my two trees have just been setting doing nothing. I grabbed them off the bench and took them out to the compost pile, told both of them in no uncertain terms, to either get with it or to the pile they go! They took the demand seriously, as of last Friday there was new growth and flowers. BTW they asked if you would please tell their sister tree hello for them?- Millet
