It would sure be fun to grow this cultivar. I wish California would get the budwood and get going with this.

We'll see how it turns out Patty...I'm not sure that anyone is exactly sure how this cultivar is going to do in my climate - no clue as to when it will color up. Fingers crossed though... I'm going to do what they do in Japan and store the fruit after I pick it for 20 days to let the citric acid mellow out a little. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Well, I just couldn’t wait any longer to try the single shirinui I left to hang this year. Good gracious….the hype is not just hype…this is one solid citrus fruit. I shared with my wife who has no idea of what it was and she said it was the best tasting orange she has ever eaten. Very large fruit – about the size of the bigger store bought grapefruit. The taste was fresh and wicked sweet. Not tart but not just sweet either. I read somewhere that the sugars coat the back of your palate like what happens when you eat a piece of hard candy. This is in fact the case. It is not juicy when you break it apart. The juice vesicles are large, firm and, have just the tiniest bit of “pop” when you bite into a segment. Peel is thick but falls off. No seeds. I’m encouraged with such results in my climate as initially, I don’t think anyone knew how it would do. I have this tree in a container. It is on carrizzo rootstock. I will grow more of these trees.

Best,

Skinn30a

I have only just tasted shiranui for the first time this past week, as they have only arrived to my knowledge here this season. Meh. Lacks depth. I have had Golden Nuggets that are better. I am tempted to grow my own still as they are pretty good. Same as with the Xie Shan, even though acquiring that would be based purely on everyone's recommendations here on the forum. Never found them in the market yet to taste.

I'd like to try my hand at a Dekopan sometime. Millet do you know of any greenhouses here in Colorado that have a good citrus/tropical selection? I've found one in Boulder and a couple in Longmont, but none of them have much selection-wise. I doubt I'd be able to get a Dekopan anywhere here and will likely have to order it (Harris you said?) but figured it was worth asking. Also Millet next time you toss something on the compost pile let me know and I'll gladly drive out to you and give it a home!

I understand it makes no difference to the plant growth and the seedling is not going to fruit any time soon... still, I was pleasantly surprised to find this flower bud on my one year old Dekopon seedling!

Very Happy

Phil,

this is great! We can have a race: whose Sumo seedling will fruit first. Very Happy Of course, I started one year ahead of you, but you have much more experience! Wink

Hey all, I haven't been on here in a few years. My citrus are alive and well.

Are Dekopon plants available in Texas yet?
