I had a Dekopon right from the tree and it was exceptional. No chilling needed to develop the taste. Much, much better than the 2 cases I had from the store. It is definitely worth a spot in my orchard when I can get one. Same with the Seedless Kishu, which was the #1 mandarin that day at the Citrus Collection. The two trees at the Citrus Collection had all the low hanging fruit already gone, as it is the favorite tree in the collection there, for all the workers and employees for good reason. The #2 spot went to the Lee x Nova cross (USDA 88-2 mandarin). I have a small one growing that will go into the ground next year. They really need to get a decent name for that mandarin, poor thing is going to end up being the "Lee x Nova" mandarin. The Dekopon was a very close 3rd in my personal taste tests, with the Valentine Pummelo hybrid right on its heels. _________________ Patty S.

I used to grow a Seedless Kishu tree. As Hoosierquilt wrote, the fruit was good to the taste. Kishu's main problem, is that the fruit is just much much to small to mess with. Finally the tree met its cousins in the compost pile. - Millet 97 |

I'm currently growing the Seedless Kishu, USDA 88-2, Page, and Gold Nugget. In my neck of the woods, the seedless kishu seems to be much more vigorous than the USDA 88-2. It had a 2 year head start from when I topworked my trees and the Kishu has already caught up in size. I'm finally starting to get fruit off of each, but I also notice that the leaf miners seem to prefer the USDA 88-2 over the Kishu so maybe that stunted the growth on those trees.

Hey Phillip! Haven't heard from you in a while. Good to know your Seedless Kishu is doing so well. You'll really like that Lee x Nova cross. It is very good. Do you have Xie Shaun worked into your orchard? I'm thinking if getting budwood. I have some C35 rootstock, so time to practice citrus grafting u think! _________________ Patty S.

I have three trees topworked into Xie Shan. If I wasn't in the quarantine area, I'd offer you some budwood. Now seems like a good time to be grafting. My bark is still slipping and the temperatures have cooled off a little. I recently got done with topworking 8 trees into Cara Cara Navel Orange. Today I was budding onto some trees that I grafted previously that had buds die on one side of the tree leaving a lopsided tree. 'Hope all is well with you.

I know, sigh. I wonder if we're in the same quarantine area? Don't think Vista is quarantined, yet. I'd love to come down, though, and watch you graft one day! _________________ Patty S.

Thanks Victor,
I purchased one at the Davis Hwy Home Dept store. I guess we'll know in a few years how our climate will effect this variety.

Well, now. Why on earth can't UCR CCPP get their hands on this budwood for goodness' sake. Sure would be nice. I keep checking their budwood list, but no Dekopon or Shiranui, yet. _________________ Patty S.

I saw a fingerlime at Lowes today thinking that was an odd cultivar I've never seen in their garden section before. I should have seen if they had a Shiranui.

Well, if you see a Shiranui, Phillip, let me know! That is odd to see such an unusual citrus at Lowe's, especially this time of year. _________________ Patty S.

Are you sure, they still have "The USDA Prohibits Florida Citrus Growers From
Shipping Out of State At this Time" posted on their shipping page. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...
