NYT article: "This Business Is a Lemon, and a Family Wants to Keep It That Way"
and accompanied video.
I've found it on other forum.

I believe they are indeed a lemon / citron hybrid.

"Cedri" means citrons (citrus medica)

according to this article: http://www.freshplaza.it/news_detail.asp?id=26553
those are local varieties of citrus medica, sweet and large "Cedro di Sorrento" (means citron from Sorrento) is called "sfusato"

just type on google "cedri di Amalfi" or "cedri di Sorrento"

"Sfusato" refers to the shape of the fruit (shape like spinning spool)

Il limone sfusato di Amalfi (or Sorrento) - lemon from Amalfi coast
Il cedro sfusato di Amalfi (or Sorrento)- citron from Amalfi coast

Probably has different meaning in different parts of the world. Here in the US Sfusato has always been referred to as a Feninello lemon type.
