Personal Dooryard Agreement
I'll be calling Harris tomorrow.
Fortunately I won't need a greenhouse
But I will need another spot to plant. _________________ Charles in Pensacola

The NVMDC are the folks who control the release , they decide who gets the budwood from the bureau & who gets the plants.
Harris budded the plants , but they cannot release any with out the license agreement approved by the NVMDC executive director who is J."Peter" Chaires
SO-- The agreement had to be signed , mailed to him , then he notifies Harris( or other growers approved to grow them by the NVMDC) that your "good to go / approved". Then you can pick them up or get them shipped to you. |

OK, thank you, that clears it up. Sounds like way too much trouble to go through for a citrus tree. I think I will pass it up. Anyway, thank you for your information. - Millet |

As to new things coming out- there should be several new things comming out within the next few years- A super duper tasting white GF(not a hybrid), 2 great tarty/sweet mandarins , one a bit smaller than a baseball and at least 2 good pumelos one was HUGE- they have it tenetivly labeled as "Monster"
A few things resistant to canker and hlb- and a GF that all the old guys can eat with out worring about their health-- I'm only 53 so I can eat them with no worries. |
Fred those new varieties sound great. Is there a link we can go to to see these varieties?
Can you give us more information on the "Monster" pomelo please? How large and how heavy does it get? Is the taste any good? |

Fred, do you know what state these new citrus cultivars will be introduced to? Hopefully, not Florida. They do sound interesting! _________________ Patty S.

It is a little disconcerting that citrus varieties are coming out requiring royalties, contracts, and a censor who decides if certain people can or cannot "own" or even grow the tree, when the tree was developed by a public University. The very existence of the University is due to a lot, and I mean a lot, of taxes paid by American citizens. If it wasn't for the tax payers, the Universities would not be able to develop a single thing. - Millet |

Totally agree! Also, the way they limit you to only a few selections of budwood per person, and the hoops and expense you have to go through to get the budwood also irks me.
If I ever developed a good variety I'd much rather distribute it to the forum members than some greedy university who would horde it. |

Yep that is the guy that sent me the 17 page document that was very restrictive and made it very clear that I did not own the plant and that they control the plant and anything it produces.
Hopefully they less than two page document will be friendlier.
I did call Ruth at Harris Citrus but she was not in and I left a message with call back information.
Fred the way you described it is correct. Peter supplies the form which you return and then an authorization is issued to Harris to sell the plant. _________________ Charles in Pensacola

No citrus variety, not one, not a single one, has ever- ever- been kept from becoming fully available to the general public---not one. The latest futile attempt was Dekopon. It did not take long at all before any one can get a Dekopon tree (actually it would not be much of a problem at all, even in citrus growing states to get a Dekopon tree if a person is determent to get one). Legally or illegally every variety finds its way to the public, to whoever wants one. This will hold true for Sugar Belle, and for all new varieties in the future. Human nature being what it is, people will sign the contract and then give budwood, seeds, trees or whatever to family members, friends, even sell them illegally for the profit. It won't take long, despite University of Florida's regulations. If I wanted a Sugar Belle, or most any variety, I could easily get them from the "black" market (in this country or from over seas) in two weeks, to a month delivered to Colorado. - Millet |
