So how many different varieties are there of these blood mandarins? Maybe they are all the same with different names?

So: Made in Italy

AMOA 8 - orange Moro x Avana - red outside and inside
OTA 9 - clementine Oroval x orange Tarocco - deep red outside and inside
TACLE - clementine Monreal x orange Tarocco (4x) - orange outside and orange with red marks inside
MANDARED - clementine di Nules (2x) x orange Tarocco (4x) - orange outside and red inside
ALKANTARA - clementine Oroval (2x) x arancio Tarocco (4x) - orange outside and orange with red marks inside.

Of theese i heard that only AMOA8 and OTA9 is possible to get as ornamental plats as the other 3 are patented plants and you need to buy ALOT to get them, which is in no interest of the commercial nurseries.

Where would OTA9 be available? Amoa8 and Tacle are available from Oscar Tintori.

I think I will ask Florealia! Smile

Does anyone have pictures of OTA9? I couldn't find any...

I wonder if Florealia is still in business... I emailed them and haven't got any response yet which is unusual. Also, their web site is completely gone now... Rolling Eyes

Now that's funny... I emailed the author of the article at freshplaza.it. I started by apologising for writing in English because I don't know any Italian. Within half an hour I received a reply from the author... in my own language! (Dutch) Very Happy

The author gave me the same contact data as given in the article, but with the addition of an email address. I'll try to send them an email message tomorrow!

I found another reference with pictures and description of the striped citrus hybrid...

http://rps.entecra.it/pages/ResearchData/data/progetti/63_ALLEGATO_PROFLOMER.pdf

It's on page 39 of the PDF document. It is in Italian unfortunately, but for convenience, I already ran the text thru google translate...

Quote:
DESCRIPTION:
This hybrid diploid obtained by crossing (X Meyer Lemon Blood Orange Twin) has
showed morphological characteristics of ornamental value. The foliage is in fact
quite thick with thorns of shorter length, virtually absent in peripheral branches. the
leaves are medium to ovate, green in color very intense with typical ripple in
the upper part of the lamina, of leathery appearance with entire margin. The flowers are large, white
speckled with red anthocyanins, individually or in small groups. The fruiting is early and
abundant. The fruits are medium sized, spheroidal with apex slightly concave distal
and strong attachment to the stalk. The skin streaked cross deep red color
anthocyanic which alternate with areas of orange color, of high aesthetic effect, and is rich
pleasantly fragrant essential oils. The flesh is slightly acidic. It lends itself to the
production of plants in pots of different sizes in the form a 'bush' or wall. the substrate
cultivation must meet the requirements of porosity and softness, to prevent water stagnation and
asphyxial phenomena that favor the development of parasitic fungi and be rich in elements
nutrients. The grafting on vigorous rootstocks such as citrumelo, lemon and volkameriano
the Alemow and practice of fertigation allow to obtain plants in the form a
'bush' fruiting and foliage well developed already in the second year of cultivation. not
was assessed suitability for production of rooted plants.

This plant would make a perfect christmas present! Wink

...and I just received an email from CRA...

Quote:
Dear Sir,
I saw the picture attached. This is a hybrid obtained by crossing of lemon and a blood orange, very promising for potted citrus production.
This year, the ‘Council for agricultural research’ of Rome which it belongs our Center has applied this for a italian patent and, therefore,it is not yet available in italian nurseries.

AMOA8 instead was released from our Center about 10 years ago without patent and therefore you can freely buy it in more important sicilian ornamental Citrus nurseries .

Sincerely
