My Way of Separating a Pup
Heres a Sweetheart that is ready for transplanting
I dig around the pup getting as much soil around. But trying not to damage any roots.
I use a sawsaw to cut the cord from the mother. I first use alcohol on the blade to rid of bacteria and such.
Then I use a flat shovel to severe the pup from the corm. I dug as much dirt as possible taking care not to remove the sorrounding soil on the roots.
Heres the new pup ready for transplant. Se how smooth the cut is.
Heres the new plant. It did not even knew she was detached from her mother. It is growing beautifully from day one.
BTW, this is Joe's Sweetheart he gave me not too long ago.
The Mahoi had pupped so is the dwarf brazilian but the california gold has not. But the single pup that came up is growing so tall. |

good pics ben!!
my CG hasn't pupped yet either.. but it is healthy. and that is the least I can ask for.. If it doesn't get much bigger it might spend next yr in pot as well. but if it gets a few more feet on it I will plant it in the yard next yr.. maybe even get fruit!!!!
107*F on the heat index today.. BLAH!!! but.. no rain!!!!! yeaaaa!!!
temps like this no sign of fall.. so still plenty of time to put on more growth..

Glad I can help Justjoan. I am happy for you.
Gina:
I guess we will just have to wait what will happen. I am doing my best to keep them healthy and fed.
I have plenty of banana varieties and each one just surprise me how they behave. So I am inspecting them every day what new things they are up to. |

Benny, my Cal Gold now has one decent sized pup and 2 small ones that aren't doing much yet. The pup I bought from Jeff Earl back in April or so is growing, but not very quickly. In the past month I have added about 22 cultivars to my banana collection. I received a wonderful and unexpected surprise yesterday when a package from a friend with some other tropical plants arrived and included an 'Ae Ae' pup. Now I'm terrified I will kill it. Yikes!
Jordon on the bananas.org forum has been raising 'Ae Ae' for 40 years and has been giving me some advice, but our dry air is a challenge.
Good luck on your bananas! _________________ Harvey |

WOW!!!
IMAGINE THAT!!!!
Are my eyes fooling me?
Benny has PSEUDOSTEM-RIPENED CALIFORNIA GOLD BANANA FRUITS!!! That is one of the priceless achievements. See some of the fruits in the near upper hands of the bunch to your left. They are yellow, and all the fruits are plump.
I myself haven't produced a ripened banana on the plant in Davis yet, simply we have shorter days for optimum banana growth outside. In winter, all leaves die out, and during the summer when it gets over 95 deg F, the bananas also stop growing.
Benny was contemplating a long time ago to remove the whole bloom but was sure glad he listened to me, and now this is his reward.
Congratulations Benny! |

No, Joe, You are the one who is priceless. Without you,we are nobody. We would still be groping on how to grow bananas from pups.
Here's some of the bananas I have. The one on the background is a dwarf Brazilian you gave me.

My CG banana is doing fairly well.. still no pup but maybe next spring..
It is now dirt to leaves about 3 1/2 ft.. almost 6 ft even to tip of current new leaf.. it still put a new leaf out a month after bringing it in for the winter.. I'll get some pics up when I have my plant room better organized..
I hope that over wintering it in a pot will give a jump start to next yr.. and maybe fruit if I'm lucky!!
yours look fantastic!!!
Maybe by this time next yr I'll have pups and fruit.. as big as it is now.. I will be planting it in ground next spring..
I'm thinking of getting a Basjoo next yr and over wintering it in ground with a bunch of protection..
I'll never have as many beautiful nanners as you and Joe.. but it's a start!!
Let me know how the flavor is.. my mouth is watering just looking at the pics!!!

Thanks Gina.
I am also thinking to put them on the ground next year and I'll sell some of them because I just don't have any more room in my yard. All of them are pupping up like crazy except my California Gold. Only one pup per corm. I guess that's on their genes. Meantime I'll just put them in pots and hopefully will survive this Winter. I am still trying to find the best medium for them to grow.
Skeet:
I am sure you'll get your wish next Spring.
Me too. I have a bunch of dwarf Cav and sweethearts and Joe's dwarf Brazilian that I hope will fruit next Spring.
Meantime, Joe: which ones should I protect the most? sweetheart? Mahoi? Dwarf Orinoco? |
