Thanks for the lessons, Joe and Benny, that is very interesting.
Boy, Joe, I guess you can do a whole "bunch" more sharing on your island with 250 pounds! _________________ Harvey |

Harvey,
You might consider planting Dwarf Brazilian if you don't have them yet. I can give you one. I have a few "unwanted" pups coming out. My Dwarf Brazilian is I think a cold hardy sport mutation because it performed much better than Jeff Earl's California Gold during the arctic blast. It leafed out quicker and the trunk is greener than California Gold.
My bananas are being shared by relatives in exchange of watching for our island. The only reason we bought that island is because it has a nice white beach with calm waters. Also in case the next ice age comes within our lifetime, it would be a nice place to grow citruses, |

Joe:
Are you going to invite me to swim at the beach at your island? Together with your homemade wine? Philippine honeys are optional.
Unless you have one planted and ripe already in your island. |

Sure... When our company gets sold.... then I can retire and perhaps could invite you over, I will shoulder all your food and lodging when over there. there is no internet, no electricity, no water pipes, no gas lines. Just the wild wild beach, some bananas, coconuts, avocadoes, mangoes. Swimming is good... And fishing too. It is next to a big island called Guimaras where premium quality Philippine Mangoes for export are produced.
Going to the island can be done via swimming in the warm tropical waters from Guimaras, or hire a canoe. During the very very low tide of the month, you can wade through at neck high waters if you don't know how to swim, just do it quick before the tides get back up gain.
The island though is within cell phone reception from all sides, so there is no escape unless you throw away your cell phone! |

Yes, Joe, please sign me up to try a Dwarf Brazilian and for camping out at your island. My Treo battery dies quickly so I should be safe since you don't have electricity.
Do you think you'll be going to the CRFG gathering I forwarded you information on? If so, I'm thinking I might go to see what I can pick up and I can get the pup from you then.
Also, if someone has an interest in a Dwarf Orinoco, please drop me a PM. This will be my first experience at separating a pup, so I offer no guarantees! _________________ Harvey |

Well, there I was wandering around and outdoor garden center outside a Shopko store in LaCrosse Wisconsin over the weekend and what did my wandering eyes see but a few 4ft Basjoo Banana trees looking back at me. I couldn't believe it. This was not a permanent nursery, just one of those temporary facilities they set up to sell mostly annuals.
They were very nice, looked very healthy and waiting for a home to go to. Surprise, surprise, surprise _________________

Joe, I'm anxious about getting the Dwarf Brazlian. I learned on another forum that this cultivar is widely grown in Hawaii and most likely what I've had when I bought "apple" bananas. Maybe I'll make it over later this week.
Benny, do you see any more pups on your Cal Gold yet? How is that bunch coming along? I'm still waiting for my new Cal Gold pup to start growing (I put it in a pot a 2-3 weeks ago, though it seems longer!).

Harvey:
No. No pups yet.
I am wondering why.
I gave all the TLC it wants yet none. Even the D Brazilian. None. But the sweetheart, only 2 1/2 foot tall gave off 3 pups already.
I think during transplant it was stressed too much.
The main corm was cut off in two and 95% of its roots was cut off. It was grown on hard clay soil. There were 2 pups attached to it when I got it but the arctic blast done them in. Even the D Brazilian, when Joe gave me that there were 2 good pups came with it but both did not make it.
I am just glad that both mothers are both alive and healthy.
In due course, when they have built new root system it will give off new pups.
What about you. Did you get your california gold yet?

Yes, Benny, I got my Cal Gold almost 24 days ago but it isn't growing yet. It's a sword pup and I planted it in a pot about 4 hours after it was separated from the mother plant by Jeff. Joe tells me to be patient, but that's difficult. I have it under a large tree where it gets morning sun and filtered light for the rest of the day. Hope it starts going soon! _________________ Harvey |

Cal gold is a different animal I don't know nothing about.
I will just count my blessings what it will give me.
I will leave it where it was planted and I will protect it when it need be.
The other corm where it has fruit will also stay where it is- on a half wine barrel. That one do not give off any pup yet.
I will just be thrilled if I can eat the fruit when it matures.
That will be the day.
All of my other bananas I transferred them to pots |
