Hi, Gina. Just when I was beginning to think I was the only one to have done this. Aren't they neat. The one that I have was started in March last year and it's coming along nicely. I wonder how long it'll take before they flower. My seeds came from a Del Monte Gold (Extra Sweet) pineapple from Hawaii. How about yours?

I had saved the tag but I think my husband threw it out. I honestly don't know what brand name they are. these were only started sprouting nov 15th. I have tried over a dozen tops and never been able to get any to grow. Think they never had a chance to begin with. I was shocked that I found the seeds.. even more so that they are growing.. Info that I have been reading ranges any where from 2 yrs to 5 yrs before they produce fruit. Might hear from more ppl on this forum that are also growing pineapples. Do you have any photos of yours? Love to see what these little guys are going to look like..

Nice seedlings! Each will be a new variety of its own.

On the topic of starting tops (crowns) -- most people fail because they rot them. Tradition is to cut them off with a bit of the fruit at the base. But that is NOT the best way -- rather, grab the whole crown and twist it off of the fruit. It will come loose without any fruit pulp attached.

Then tradition says you should start them in a glass of water. Another mistake! Instead, set the crown on the counter or windowsill, open to the air, and let it sit there for a week or two. Give it no water at all. You want the wounded area to dry and harden. It will not die of drought -- I've kept them this way for over a year, and they were still alive and happy.

After a week or two of drying, plant it in an acidic soil. Using this method, we never lose one anymore, and we do several per year.

Ahhhh.. I never let mine dry out. I have tried the cut the top off.. and twisted them off.. but I never let them dry out.. wonder if it is too late for the one I have now? just got it Sunday it has some nice white spots where roots are trying to come out. I stripped all of the really bad leaves. last top I tried I set it in soil directly so I was trying cup of water this time. I'll pull it out now and allow it to dry. THANKS!!!!!

[An attempt to show an image was here.]

Being inside all the time the plant doesn't get as much sun and heat as it would like but it looks healthy. I think it would be much happier in a greenhouse.

Argh! I can't figure out why the image won't display.

Your link is to a thread not a image & also I don't believe UBC allows direct linking... Upload it to imageshack.us, it's free easy & quick.

Thanks, Laaz. I knew there had to be an explanation.

Gina and Jungle, Interesting. I have grown a lot of pineapples in the past, but have never seen one grown from seed. I statred by first one from the top of a store bought fruit, then grew many from pups (suckers) that develop from the mother plant. The mother pineapple will send out a lot of pubs after it has produced a pineapple. When you start a pinapple from a 6 inch pub it still takes about 18 months to get a pineapple fruit. You should also know that by the time the pineapple starts to produce a fruit the plant will be approximately 4 feet wide and 3 feet tall with LOTS of very sharp leaves. It is also very doubtful if you will ever get a fruit from a plant grown inside the house, however, they do well in a warm greenhouse. - Millet

Our local HD had variegated Pineapple plants with fruit already on this past summer. If I had the time to look after something else I would have picked one up.

Question : Where are the seeds on a pinapple. I have never seen one with seed...

Laaz,
It's kind of like gettting a seedy 'Clementine' -- you have to luck out. Pineapples are strongly self-incompatible, so if you grow them in solid one-cultivar fields, isolated from any other cultivar, virtually all of the fruit will be totally seedless. But if they get cross-pollinated, there can be several seeds in each fruit. They're located in the fruit pulp, just outside the core, and are slightly bigger than grains of corn.

Words will have to do in the absence of a picture. My 20-month old plant is 4" tall, has a spread of 9" and leaf blade width of 3/4".

Gina,
Your guys look different than mine. The ones I grew started out looking like blades of grass. Maybe the amount of heat the seedlings are subjected to causes the variance.

Laaz,
Look for a seed in the 'pit' where a flower used to be. Only those flowers that have been cross-pollinated will have a seed though. They're brown and roughly half the size of a grain of rice and has a creamy-yellow stripe down its length.

This description is consistent with what is seen is Gina's pictures but the ones I have encountered look much different. Surely the variety of pineapple could not account for such a big difference in seed size, can it? Too bad we don't know what type of pineapple Gina's seeds came from.
