Patty,
I believe I am going to force mine to bloom before it gets to that size.. I really don't have the room right now either.. Forcing is mentioned earlier in this thread..
But then.. that is long way off for my seedlings.. and who knows.. between now and then I might just win the lottery!!! Laughing Then I could build my dream greenhouse!!! Wink

Hi Gina, it wasn't me that mentioned size LOL. My pineapple is still real small. I hear they are VERY DANGEROUS so be careful with kids around it. The leaves can be razor sharp. I also have 3 bromeliads which pineapple is in same family. When I want to force bloom, i put cut up apples in the plant then put whole thing in plastic bag..blow into it, & tie it & leave like that for at least few days. It worked for me once before.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned.

so sorry to hear that Tammy. Crying or Very sad
All of the info I have learned about pineapples has been via internet..
Might find a Bromeliad book helpful.. I'm sure it would have a section just for pineapples.. I have found small bits of info in some of my house plant books.. section for bromeliads.. But not near the info I have found online..

I have my Pineapples out side now.. they are loving the HOT HUMID days!!!! They still have no roots poking out of the peat pellets..

Tam.. did you water the leaves?? I found that the plants that I had rotted when I watered above and locked them back up in their container not allowing the water to evaporate off..
I have stuck to watering the peat pellets or waiting till the water evaporated off now..

IF they are Hawaii pineapples you probably won't find seeds.. Hawaii does not have pineapple pollinators. But if nothing else you have tops to start..
Good luck!!!

got a Fyffes Gold pineapple, found many seeds, some with multiple seeds in one flower!

From the site: "The Fyffes Gold pineapple is produced by growers in countries such as Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama and Guatemala"

I think i nicked a few, but i got 14! Im going to do the coir-baggie trick, were going out of town this weekend and I dont want them to dry out if I just pot them.

Thanks for yet another habit folks Wink

If the top detach and come out , it is probably from over watering. I currently have 4 pineapples in the ground, all from suckers taken from plants that had already fruited. - Millet

really looking forwards to learning about pineapples. I had one given to me today. Not at home yet or I'd post a pic. Its fairly big, almost 1 foot tall and it has 2 or 3 little plants starting too. Can I remove those and plant seperatly?

Yet another fruit I know NOTHING about. citrus, other tropicals. and now my pineapple. Oh my one of these years I'm going to be overloaded with fruit

WOOHOO!!!! More addicts to share my addiction with!!! Cool
I'll get some more Photos up next few days.. The three remaining are coming along nicely.. they really love the humid out doors.. I have them on the porch close to the front door (directly under the security light!!) and protected from the harsh rain we had a few days back.. but they get to bask in the humidity created by the rain followed by upper 80s and 90s we have been having..

I am kinda starting to get really excited by my pineapple. Its SO much bigger than the one he WAS going to give me. back in april he gave me a tiny little only, like 1 inch tall or so... but it got left behind... so he gave me a BIG one. its soooo cool.

weird thing was... ALL his pineapples were from the same kind... but he has one there, actually fruiting now... but its all RED!!! he's wondering if it got to much ferts or something. it looks like some of those cool funky red colored pineapples from various countries. Any idea why it would switch to red? would a fert do that? maybe a 'burn' or something?

I'll get dressed and run outside to take pics with my digital. Sad Sad Sad Sad I have to give it back to my dad for a few weeks. he can't afford to get the one he wants yet... so its up to me to give it back. you have NO idea how hard that was. It take soooo beautiful pics. Actually, I was on the coast... vancouver, vancouver island... and you should see the pics... coolest part, at the marina, got up close to several amazing seals. I think my secondary addiction is photography. Some of my pics from this trip, going to see about getting blown up to poster size. I want to mount and fram them. seriously amazing. Instead of filling up space here, going to start a simple geocities site and post all my pics. pretty excited about it.

any more tips and advice with pineapples.... like even the type of soil... let me know! I'm all ears on this

Here is a good informational web site about pineapple culture, published by the CRFG (California Rare Fruit Growers). http://crfg.org/pubs/ff/pineapple.html - Millet
