I've been growing pineapples for a couple years or so... started with a gift that someone got me for my birthday I think, a little specimen from Target of so.
Anyways, I've found them to be quite easy to grow, the one I started has produced 3 "offspring," the largest of which is currently about 2 feet tall... I think it's been rootbound for some time, but I'm out of CHC's so it'll have to wait a bit longer before it gets any treatment.
Someone asked about fertilizer, I don't really know much about their nutritional requirements, but I have been alternating between a 3-1-1, and a 2-1.5-1.5 with micronutrients. Occasionally I throw in some fish emulsion as well; it all seems to be working fairly well, they all look to me healthy and grow at a fair pace (for being inside an apartment all winter).
Anyways, just thought I'd make a few comments. I like the little baby pineapples, they's so tiny!

Well I cut up the pineapple and found 19 seeds. Actually I had 20 but dropped one and it went into limbo/never-neverland, anyways, it's just gone.
They have different colors as you can see in the pic.
Did yours have different colors or were they all the same?
The pineapple tasted great, had to force myself to stop eating it.
I twisted off the top and it is just sitting and drying out. I'll plant that at the end of the month. The seeds are going to go into 2 different snack size bags and then into the makeshift greenhouse(a heating pad with a 12 peat pellet size greenhouse on top of it). _________________ Disneygirl |

After the pineapple plant produces a fruit and is harvested, the plant sends out 2 or 3 shoots (pups). I would let them grow on the mother plant until they were about 1-foot tall, then take them off and plant them in the ground. The next round of pineapples takes a shorter period of time to produce another fruit. After reading through this post I could not resists to plant all the new pups so now I have 4 plants growing. Gina your thead is catching. - Millet |

Goodness!! What have I done?? LOL I am highly contagious!! everyone stand back!!! LOL
disneygirl, yes the seeds were different colors.. If I were to start it all over again I would probably have started the seeds in Peat Pellets. they are doing extremely well in the peat pellets.. and keep them as warm as you can.. They like it hot and humid..

O.K. I'll take 1/2 of them and put them in peat pellets and see how they do. If they do better then the ones in the bag then i'll just take them out and put them in pellets also. Thanks yes and you are very contagious. But then I am a willing participant.

All of the ones I did in March, nothing has shown yet. Tonight I just planted 23 seeds out of the one I ate today. The ones I planted tonight are a DelMonte Extra Sweet. So now I have (hopefully) 2 different kinds of pineapples that will grow. As soon as something shows I will post pic's. _________________ Disneygirl |

From all that I have read and learned from others Pineapple seeds do not come true from seeds.. so you may have several new varieties Maybe even better than what you ate.. but maybe not.. Fun part is getting there.

Oh, Yeah. I forgot about that part. Just so excited about getting them planted. I twisted off the top a couple of days ago, so in a few more days I'll plant that too.
Thanks. _________________ Disneygirl |

My seedling has grown both in height and in girth - the lowest leaf has split open at the base because of this. I get a feeling there'll be much growth this year.
I also started a top from a Del Monte Gold (Extra Sweet) from Hawaii in late December last year as I wanted a copy of the cultivar. It has since gained about 6" in height. If it keeps up this pace I'll have to move it to a bigger pot soon; the 5" pot seemed like the right size at the time. _________________ Indoor Grower |

Juglekeeper, you will need a 5-gallon container to finish off your pineapple. The Hawaiian varitey you planted will be 4-ft. tall and 4-ft. wide when the fruit begains to show and develop. - Millet |

Something that big would not be a good fit in my 9'x12' room. I hope everyone here will continue to make progress reports. _________________ Indoor Grower |
