Hi Patty,
YES! I actually do kind of have an order made out!!
I am still researching a few of the varieties, but as it stands now...there are ten that I want.
They don't have a MAXIMUM do they!!??

There is no mention of any maximum.
It sounds as though Chops is on his way to being a figaholic

Not to mention the other fruits & nuts they have!
Darren, on my order sheet -from what I remember, ther were 17 spaces to fill out for order of figs. I s'pose you could order more, but I just filled them all in.
Did anyone read the bottom of page of shipping order? the very bottom says:
"Although obtained from reputable sources and subject to on going verification, The National Germplasm Repository at Davis assumes no responsiblitiy for the identification or performance of this plant material. In addition, unless otherwise stated, this material is not certified to be disease-free." ARGHHHHHH
I guess that's why they're free!
EDIT: I don't know if that is true for other than figs. I only ordered figs. _________________ Patty

I got Panachee, Flanders, Excel, Alma, Ischia Green, Calimyrna, Osborn Prolific, Celeste, and Genoa White. They didn't send Ischia Black and Verte.
The timing isn't great, because I'm not going to be able to pot them up until Sunday due to work and a never-ending series of soccer and basketball games |

SB, you got my Alma? LOL, they didn't send mine. Keep the cuttings wrapped in wet paper towels & in veggie crisper till you pot them.
I wonder if anyone got Ischia Black. They said "plant not available".
Some of the tips are not at all green. I wonder if that Ca frost got to some of them...we'll see. _________________ Patty

Bummer,
I got an e-mail basically saying that I can't get anything (fig wise) until next year. They are NOT doing any Summer cuttings and to just send in my order in September.
Oh well, at least that gives me more time for researching varieties!

FYI, the UC Davis fig collection is infected by Fig Mosaic Virus. This may or may not be a concern to the individual grower. Figs may or may not show symptoms and the degree to which any plant shows symptoms varies. UC Davis is of the opinion that it is not a problem and I share that opinion. Basically you have FMV or you don't. If you have some stock with it and some without all of your trees will eventually get it. Yadda out. _________________ Yadda

Hi Yadda, yes we pretty much know of the FMV...thanks.
We wrote about it in the "Fig trees waking up" thread, maybe 2-4th page (?). It's dissappointing, but we'll see. _________________ Patty

My cuttings are not looking real good...in fact no change since I planted them. Several look dead. I did the "scratch test" on a few & they are still green, but tips are not turning green & no buds.
How are yours doing? Just curious. _________________ Patty

I was going to ask you all how yours are doing....
I used 2 big planters for all of my cuttings, figuring a larger container will need watererd less often.
some are still greenish, but some arent looking good at all. didnt use rooting hormone since theyre supposed to be easy to root. Will try gently unpotting tomorrow I think- Ill see if ive got any clear containers to check growth, and go ahead and rooting hormone them.....
I think my problem with cuttings last year was putting them in full sun too soon, so these have been near my citrus table, getting some filtered sunlight and some light from my flourescents for tomatoes...... |

Hi Kelli, I have all in a plastic window sill planter that was given to me...about 4 inches potting mix (mostly peet) & perlite. Kept in shady hallway for few days & now in SOME west window lite. I s'pose bottom heat might help, but I 'm not doing that this time. I rooted many - just stuck branch in pot & it grew. Some of mine are definately DEAD & others have no sign of greening up those tips!
If I have time tomorrow, I'll take pics & post them.

I received about six varieties and put them in what I call my propagator. Somehow these cuttings set a record for me as far as rooting. A couple of weeks after I set them up I noticed most of them pushing out leaf growth and roots already. I do use Hormodin # 3 which is a pretty potent rooting hormone to be honest though. I was never really impressed w/ the typical rooting hormones carried by the big box stores.
Here's a few pics:
Panachee w/ roots:
Osborne Prolific w/ aggressive rooting:
A baby fig I should pinch it off:
I hope your figs pull through Garnetmoth, Patty and all. |

Eyeckr, you have the gift!
Mine don't look great either. I struck them in peat:perlite, covered, on heat mat. I think they were getting too much sun in the original spot, so yesterday I moved the whole setup into the shade. Keeping fingers crossed. |
