They do get somewhat better when left on the tree until the fruit becomes over ripe. Fair, might be the adjective I might use. - Millet (272 BO-)

Nice work Frank! I admire your dedication in keeping your trees sheltered and surviving each winter in such a cold zone. Your success has inspired my most recent bold experiment in growing cold hardy avocados in the ground here in Virginia Beach. I've got about 6 different varieties that I planted out in the ground early this year. I will be putting temporary shelters around them like you during the winter months. Hopefully they do as well as your citrus trees.

cool and thanks!!!

I should look it up , but what do u have for outdoor citrus?

I also have bananas in my basement. One was planted out side already ALL in whisky barrells. They grow fast and I store in my basement during the cooler periods... fwiw it was 29f last night!

eyeckr you do realize that avocados get massive & you need two to produce fruit. Shocked Laughing

How will you protect this ?

@Frank -I've got a lot of inground citrus. I probably have about 15-20 actual trees in the ground but most of them I multigrafted to about 2-3 varieties per tree on average. I agree bananas are fun to grow. I had a lot of success with them but now onto another challenge Smile

@Laaz -yup, I've got these avocado trees in a very sheltered corner up next to my greenhouse and house. All the different varieties are all planted right next to each other. In fact I got them out there soon enough by bloom time that three of them have set fruit. With careful pruning I plan to grow them as psuedo bonsai trees and keep them under 10-12ft (I know, keep wishing) -of course that's if they make it.

I bought a Thomasville from Mr. McKenzie last year, I imagine that being from the same grower as yours, they would be closely related, and mine would taste similar to yours (once it starts fruiting some day anyway)

What does "quite good" mean? Can you be a bit more detailed? I'm really curious. Any trifoliate after taste? What do you use them for? Eatable out of hand?
I've read some compare ripe fruit to limes or lemons, but I'm curious what your take on it is.

Thanks

we only eat them "out of hand" the peal has trifoliate taste, I would say the fruit tastes like a grapefruit a bit................
when it is orange/yellow it tastes a lot better than green.
mine blooms all summer, (although not yet), so I can have larger green ones before I cover in late october, we eat these out of hand also . These dont taste quite as good but they are edible and fine as far as I can tell

As others indirectly noted they arent as good as a Hamiln or Satsuma, but I find them to be VERY prolific, so we are happy to have citrus in our zone
5 /6....................

lmk if u have other questions

Frank

Thanks
