Thought I'd give a quick update on how the Persimmon are doing @ week #3..
I went out to check them and the buds of the graft are starting to swell!!
My dad has been going out about every other day and clearing any buds pushing from the graft to about 12 inches below the grafts just to be on the safe side.. Nothing worth taking pics of yet.. maybe next week or week there after.. Need to look up when to remove the plastic wrap and rubber bands..
I was lucky to catch a break in the weather to go out to my parents.. I haven't checked on the other outside grafts.. the Peach, plum and apple are still in pots and are being kept against the house to give them extra weather protection.. I will plant them some time soon..
I will post pics of the plum apple and peach if I can get out tomorrow is suppose to be partly cloudy..
Glad you enjoyed Gen..

Moretti,
they are just in peat pellets.. nice and compact and not much to loose for those that don't make it..
I have not seen any roots yet..
I wonder how long after they start growing will the stop top growth and put on some roots to support the new top????
I put them where they get bottom heat now.. maybe that will get the roots going..

Well... the apple and peach grafts did not make it.. and the plum graft is teetering.. it is still a bit green but has lost all of the pretty new growth..
I unwrapped it and inspected the graft union and it looks good.. when I unwrapped the apple and peach they did not hold together.. so I think the grafts were maybe not all that good to begin with.. but the branches were dark brown and much of the growth on branches around was also dead.. most everything is bouncing back ok... new growth on most everything in my yard and surrounding area that I have seen.. still limp frozen burnt growth drooping from everything.. but to see all the new growth is good..
I went out to my mom's and it looks like the persimmon are doing ok.. the growth just looks like it stopped.. the buds are swollen still and fuzzy like they will pop any minute.. the growth on the rest of the trees did not look at all affected by the cold.. maybe the location between the lower and middle ponds gave extra protection? I have no idea.. but am happy to see they look fine.. I was worried that since even my trees I had put close to the house for protection were damaged..
I have not given up on the plum.. just don't know what to do for it since it did suffer a bit but was not a total loss.. guess I'll just have to wait and see...

I know it isn't true Bonsai.. But I thought it was cute...
This FD rooted cutting was one of the few to survive the spider mites.. and it refuses to grow upright.. so rather than fighting it I am letting it grow as a kind of Bonsai..
I have a mini house collection my mom gave me for my birthday one yr that make it look like a real tall tree.. but it is only about 3" from tip to soil..
I started this before I got sick.. I'm amazed it is still alive!!!

Wonderful pic's Gina, you are truly an inspiration! I am still a freshman with this hobby but I so love to learn. You are so lucky to have your parents still with you and I am so glad they are proud of your accomplishments. I know if my Dad were still here he would be right in there with me, he was my inspiration in my love of plants. Grow on!!! _________________

some of the buds haven't pushed out of the plastic yet.. but things are looking green here in Kansas!!!!
Persimmon grafts budding and leafing out...
Pecan grafts budding....
My Mom and Dad are very proud of my work.. these are on their farm..
Grandma will be out next week end from Louisiana and will get to see my handy work..
Mom shared some family letters from the farm in the 50s... Reading some of the letters were inspirational.. Grandma and Grandpa worked very hard and did not have near the technology that I have at my fingertips now..
Mom is just now getting in to farming after retiring from cartography..
Joan.. I am still some what of a Freshmen.. My greatest ally is research..

Joe, Don't you remember leaving it here when you visited?? LOL
I also have it in red.. Hubby got me this one a few yrs ago.. We like it so much we got him a red one this spring.. a must for any family with more than 2 kids.. and often we end up with more kids that were have, needing to go from point A to point B to point C etc... Amazing how 4 kids can quickly turn in to 6 or 8.. two vans a MUST in that case..
Thanks Laaz!!!! and to EVERYONE else that has traded and gifted me in to a greener life!!!
Laaz.. I will keep the MF in a nice warm location and give it the extra TLC it needs..
I can always find room to squeeze in another!! Hubby doesn't need a place to sleep.. LOL
Need to find more stuff that will grow local.. So they can take over outside!! Have a jungle in my back yard!!! Less lawn to mow.. and at these gas prices.. I need a goat to mow the lawn!! I have a reel mower but mannnnnnnn.. Mowing is already work.. with reel mower it is doubly so.. As you can see lawn needs mower taken to it.. But I've been to busy with garden and patio..

Your plants look great Gina! You do a fine job of taking care of all those baby seedlings. It also looks like you got a fine bunch of avocado rootstock almost ready for grafting. Good to know they're all in good hands. |
