I was wondering what Dragon Fruit tastes like.
They look really neat and if they taste good I may consider getting one.
Are they sweet? Juicy? Tart?
Any info would be great. I understand that there are many different kinds, so when describing tast, please let me know what kind it is also.
Thanks
Oh, yeah do they have thorns? _________________ Disneygirl |

Hi, disneygirl. I've tried Dragon Fruit (Hylocereus undatus) with the white flesh and Yellow Pitaya (Selenicereus megalanthus) which some people mistakenly call dragon fruit. Both plants are cacti and so would have thorns. I believe dragon fruit is thornless; pitaya (which looks much like a tiny pineapple) has some thorns.
Taste is highly subjective but to me they both tasted like sugary water which I didn't find particularly pleasing. These plants need lots of space if you want to grow them. _________________ Indoor Grower |

Disney, I have 2 Dragon Fruits. Go to 'Fruits & other Tropicals' forum.
I posted links on them, however it doesn't say what they taste like. There is a juice co. that made a drink of the juice so it can't be bad. I grow them cuz the plants, blooms & fruits are very interesting. They are succulents with very tiny harmless thorns really. Look like a cactus. _________________ Patty

I really think the taste depends on the growing conditions... just like citrus. variations can be quite wide.
I purchased a white fleshed one awhile back (dang are they pricey) and today I purchased one and it was a DEEP DEEP magenta color inside. Both tasted quite different... but I found them to be an interesting taste. quite sweet and very refreshing. I love the plant, the fruit is pretty... unlike citrus which I could easily buy in a store cheap... dragon fruit... at 6.99 a pound... I'm sorry, but thats just not going to happen. I could almost buy a whole small citrus tree for that price (the one dragon fruit came to 8.45$)
Jungle, from what I read... dragon fruit are often called Pitaya on more websites. Several say the term can be used interchangably. what is the main difference, if anything. they look identical, just a color variation I thought be nice to really understand how ppl use terms interchagable on education sites, if they really are 2 seperate things completly |

Do a Google image search on Selenicereus megalanthus to see some examples. _________________ Indoor Grower |

on several dragon fruit sites, the yellow looks the same. Could there not be a yellow dragon fruit and then the yellow one you are talking about?
I'll do the search on it by name, but... all the yellow I've seen look identical. I'll have to look a lot more closely |

I had my first dragon fruit for ages last week, and I now know why I left it so long! I find them watery and bland and I don't really like the texture, but they ARE beautiful. I love the contrast of that Sciaperelli pink outside with the black and white inside, its just beautiful. And if you like the taste its a bonus I guess! Its one of the few fruits I am not really keen on! _________________ Dreaming of a citrus collection! |

It does look like 'pitaya' is used to refer to both fruits. It's unfortunate as they are from different plants. _________________ Indoor Grower |

The Dragon Fruit I see in the store are far larger than the fruit of typical Hylocereus undatus I would see grown in Florida for their flowers. I'd seek out a source of the big-fruited variety if that's really what I wanted it for. |

You ppl that can go to store & buy a dragon fruit are so lucky! I have never seen one except for pics. Late last yr I was asking about cherimoya fruits & someone posted a link of where to buy. On it , it had dragon fruit & cherimoya (out of season at time) to buy by cases. First I heard of D fruit so I searched it & ordered my first plant (from site I posted on fruits & tropicals).
Betty, if you remember, what's the taste diff between the red & white pulp fruits? _________________ Patty

re getting hold of Dragon fruit in stores...we get them occasionally in the "better" supermarkets but they are very expensive. The place to get them if you have any is a Chinese supermarket, where the Chinese restaurants go to get there stuff. They are much more available and cheaper there and we fill our freezer with dim sum too LOL _________________ Dreaming of a citrus collection! |

Congrats Tammy, that is beautiful. Pollinate it with a Q tip and you may get a fruit! Are all DF blossoms orange/red? I thought I saw a white or yellow one somewhere. (?) _________________ Patty
