I thought I would post a pic of my dragonfruit in the container. As you can see, it hasn't stopped growing. Once it warms up a bit, I'm going to lop off the top 12" and see if I can root it. Hopefully this will induce some lateral branching.

Wow SB, that thing is tall!! If I remember, your trelliss is 6 ft? I would lop it off too, hopefully you'll get those lateral branches.
Mine isn't doing too much growth except one 'Yellow' branch tip got looong & skinny. Where did you get yours?
I can't remember, but did I send you a cutting?
What kind of banana is that (sorry - so many questions)?
What is your ave temps in your greenhouse?
I can't wait for SPRING. _________________ Patty

As stated elsewhere, the plant looks good and should branch nicely when pruned. You should be flowering come spring.
I wrapped my post with that coconut fiber matting for the aerial roots to grab hold of and to soak with liquid fert. Looks pretty good and the plants have already latched on after a day.
Your picture also makes me feel better about my greenhouse too! I've been complaining about tight spaces, tip-toeing between plants, and crowding. You look more packed than I am! That's great...you've just inspired me into making a wish list for more plants!!! |

Patty, the banana is Dwarf Orinoco. I had it in a raised bed but it was growing right into the roof, bending and breaking all of the leaves. I dug it up and potted it, and as you can see, it didn't appreciate the move!
I got the dragon fruit from Flora Exotica. I'm going to add a couple more named varieties from Pine Island in the spring. I keep the thermostat at 60F and it rarely gets below 58F...it did this morning, though, it was 6F overnight!
Jay, I am going to try the burlap. We can compare results... |

I was just looking through a tropical seed website and saw a picture of some dragon fruit trees and I thought there way of training is interesting because it is like a standard upright tree. I will give the link, it is about half way down the page. (i want to avoid copyright laws)
http://www.jungleseeds.co.uk/SeedOrders/enter.html
It won't go to the right page, but go to the tropical fruit link and there it is half way down. _________________

Valenciaguy, I am so really glad that you posted those particular pictures of Dragon Fruit. For a long time I kept seeing picture after picture on this forum (and other forms) of Dragon Fruit with only ONE VERY LONG growing "branch." I have two dragon fruit plants, neither of mine ever grew like the pictures I've seen on these forums. In fact on one post I comment to Patty From Wis. asking if she was sure that her plant was indeed a Dragon Fruit. Both of my plants look almost exactly like the picture that you posted above with many branches, that hang down just as shown on the post you provided. Citrus Joe's Dragon Fruit plant only has one long branch, maybe 20-feet long, and perhaps 4 or 5 years old, but it has NEVER fruited. I wonder if anyone on this forum has ever been able to get a SINGLE branch Dragon Fruit plant to produce any fruit? BTW good news on your citrus seeds, hang in there with the Ponkan, they will come around.

My DF is now about 12" longer than in the pic above. I intend to hack it back this weekend to try to induce the lateral branching. I will report and post pics.

StressBaby, My plants did not spout extra "branches" off of a branch, nor did the many branches come from pruning. All of the branches originate directly from the soil naturally. (much like a bush).

That's interesting Millet. Maybe if SB chops the top off, it will grow new branches from soil. With my red, it has a trunk that looks like trunk of guava, and 5 lateral branches growing off of that...not from soil.
My yellow has 2 tall ones from soil with about 5-6 smaller branches coming up from soil from same roots - like a bush. Darn, I'll have to take pics in couple days. I'll try to post them on Monday. They are getting weird looking. _________________ Patty
