I hope the following links will clear up the confusion. Notice the term pitaya is used to refer to a number of different plants/fruits in the last link. Such is the curse of common names.

never did get my pictures up of my dragon fruit... so here ya go Smile

NO clue what type, no clue really when it comes to it. All I know its a happy little plant. and hopefully it'll fruit for me someday

this is how big it was when I got it...

aand this is it now. Notice the new branches...

the smaller portions of the plant had serious damage when I go it. It was hanging over the edge, so there were rotton areas and a few holes right through... assuming somehting ate its way through. the main body isn't doing much, but the new branches sure are growing

Hi Betty, that poor thing needs steaking. Put a stake in soil & tie the " branches" to it before they fall over & break!!
Hard to tell how big it is.... they do grow fast in growing season.
How long ago did you take first pic?? Where did you buy it? Didn't they tell you what you bought, or did you forget ? Even if you get fruit (hope you do!), it'll be hard to identify. You won't get fruit till plant weighs 10 lbs or more ( according to website). Maybe less from a cutting...I don't know.

It was given to me by the guy I got my citrus from. No clue if its a cutting or a seedling. He said it was a dragon fruit and thats about it. no care no instructions... so just learning my way around things.

I do have it staked now, I did so after taking the pics.

the 2 pics were taken less than 2 months apart

Amazing pic! I have no idea if it'll fruit for ya or not... sure do hope so though. Its just beautiful!!!

I just cant wait till mine starts doing something besides sprouting new branches. There is one 'nub' of a branch... I'm wondering if it mnay be the start of a bloom. It definatly looks 'off' from the other satarts of branchesa.... we'll see though.

Congrats Tammy!!!! You are a proud Mom of a bouncing baby dragon fruit! So happy for you. Whatever you're doing...keep doin it LOL.
I have that 10 inch leg/branch rooting for you (hope it takes) of my red Thai along with 3 figgies (2 are really good). Now I think I'd love a rooted cutting of the one in your pic. I'll keep in touch. Again, CONGRATS!
BTW, they don't like a lot of nitrogen...try a 5-10-5 fert (more phosphate).

You know Patty,
I havent Used any Fert except pellets from
My rabbits and a Little Of my compost...

Its planted with potting soil and Argonite sand ..
chips in the bottom to insure draining and seems to like it ..

Like i always say i may not be doing it right but sometimes it works and some times it doesnt ..
my biologist friends hate the way i do things but cant complain because most of it works ..
So i guess I have a green thumb with out taking the class LOL Tammy

Those 3 new growths I had few months ago are now 17 inches long! I had them tied so that they grew upward, but then I read they should hang in a more downward position to get fruits. The part attached to plant is so thin...will they break off? Also, the first half (of each leg/branch) is nice & thick but the rest is very thin. Is this from too much - not enough water? I will try to post pics soon. Thanks
