Skeeter offeres some good advice when he says GA3 is very concentration dependent. Make a solution blend of 10 PPM GA3. Apply directly to the flowers when they are in full bloom. Do not over apply, as GA3 can cause juvinility when over applied. It can be applied to all types of citrus. I have used it for years, to obtain seedless fruit, and on non self compatible varieties. - Millet

You mean 10 ppm I presume.
10 mg of GA per liter is OK. It turns 10% of flowers into fruitlets and that's much! |

Sylvain, thank you for noticing my error. I have corrected my post to reflect 10 PPM GA3. With the concentration of GA3 that I use, it only takes 1 gram per U.S. gallon to obtain a 10 PPM solution. . As an aside, I also use GA3 at the 10 PPM rate on Gamble's Oak trees to obtain much additional growth. Earlier this spring I planted 500 Gamble Oak trees that I started from acorns that I gathered last spring, and then grew on throughout the winter in my greenhouse. Just today I planted another 300 acorns in a germination tray for transplanting into the field next spring. - Millet

Is that correct, Millet?
Math has never been my strong suit, but if 1 ppm equals 1mg per liter:
10ppm = 10mg/liter x 1gram/1000mg x 3.8 liter/1 gallon = 0.038grams/gal
That's assuming the GA3 is 100% pure.
Or did I make a boo-boo somewhere? As I said, math has always been my downfall! _________________ Susan B

Your calculation are correct Susan-- Millet is probably working with a diluted starting material. _________________ Skeet

Thanks Skeeter! My old boss would be so proud. Every time he'd start talking percentages and ppm I would just give him a blank, dumb look. _________________ Susan B

I used to teach part of an environmental science class at a local college and I handed out a cheat sheet that students loved--it had all the different equivalents for all the common concentrations. Like ppm=ug/g = mg/l= ul/l=ul/kg.
The thing that always messed people up was using ul times density for weight---they always wanted to think a ul was a ug (it is a mg for densities of 1). Many of the biologist at our lab ended up with my cheat sheet on their walls. _________________ Skeet

No John, I ordered the .4 -.5g for $12.95. Sounds like a very small amount. I asked them what is a good ratio of the powder to water for spraying blossoms so I'm sure they'll tell me when I get the order. _________________ Patty

Certain GA need to be mixed with a little alcohol before mixing into water. I'm sure you can find some around, Patty! kyuck kyuck kyuck _________________ Susan B

I haven't had any wine for a couple months at least. I have 5 gal. of elderberry that's been ready to bottle for almost 2 yrs now - but no time.
Maybe I should drink a shot of this stuff & see if my hair grows faster or something
I think I may take the "I drink wine to make other people more interesting" off my signature. I bought a big button once that said "I drink to make other people more interesting" & I thought it was hillarious - & it IS. But with drunk drivers killing people, it doesn't seem so funny anymore. I really don't drink as much as it prolly sounds.
BUT I DO HAVE FUN WHEN I DO ..LOL I just won't drive!!!
I think I'll have a vodka martini now Just kidding.....maybe. _________________ Patty

Got my GA-3 in the mail today. Geeze, am I confused!
It is powder - 1.25cc (0.4 - 0.5 gram) - looks like about 1/2 tsp. Says to "add contents to 12 oz distilled water to make 1000 parts per million". Millet uses 10 ppm. That's $13.00 -+ s&h for 1 1/2 cups solution.
Can anyone suggest how I should mix? They were mentioning using it as a seed coating so I don't know if that ratio is same for plant spray. I would like to mix 3/4 cup spray for now to spray on some blossoms, and store the rest. It doesn't say how to store, but at another WWW I read it should never be stored above 40f. Well, it sat in my hot black mailbox for over an hour...it's now in fridge. I'd like to spray by Thursday as I'm going away for 10 days. Thanks
Don't forget - if you order from seedman.com, type FirstOrder (just like that) as promo code & you'll get 10% discount. _________________ Patty

If they say that you obtain a 1000 ppm solution by adding 12 oz (355 g not sure) of water, it means you have 0.355 g of GA.
Anyway, to obtain a 10 ppm solution starting with a 1000 ppm solution you dilute by 100. So you must use 35500 g of water (1200 oz) = 35.5 liters = 9.4 gal.
The better is to prepare only what you need. If you don't have a precision scale you can use the "coke line" method.
You pour the powder on a glass surface and with a razor blade you make a very constant line of powder. It's very easy.
As the powder is for 9 gallons, you keep a third of this line and take a third of it. You have the weight for one gallon.
It looks odd, but it is very accurate.
The next time don't forget that you have the quantity for 8 gallons!Better to write it on a paper. |
