Thank you for your information. Is CHC the same as coir, a very popular rooting medium for rose cuttings? It is derived from coconut husk.

Sengyan, CHC is in the form of chips. I haven't worked with coir, but I think it is ground up.
Here are some pics of CHC:
In a bucket for rinsing.
A handful next to a handful of grit for comparison.

Yes, they are both from coconut husks. Coir is more like shredded & coconut husk chips are cut. People usually use 1/4 & 1/2 inch chips.
It comes very compacted so they need to be soaked & rinsed, & soaked & rinsed, & soaked & rinsed & treated to get salts out. _________________ Patty

Ive also only seen ground coir.
the CHCs act as the bulk of the planting medium, and coir can be added to take the place of peat moss or other fine, shredded ingredient. |

Thank you for your information. Please bear with me a little more. Is Coir, derived from coconut husk, the same as CHC? Coir is advertised as a substitute for peat and is said to be better than peat. It is very popular as a rooting medium for rose cuttings. _________________ Sengyan |

Yes CHC is derived from conconut husks, CHC stands for (Coconut Husk Chips) you can find CHC online or like I have found at local floral nurersies or florist shops and it is sometimes advertised for Orchids. And you can learn how to prepare it by searching the key term "CHC" or "Cation Exchange" in the search toolbar of this forum. If you have a lot of citrus I would buy it in bulk online. |

CHC is not the same as coir--they are both made from coconut husk but the difference is the particle size. Coir is fine ground --CHC is large chips 1/4 to 1/2 inch-- drainage properties are very different.
