Garnet,
here is a picture of the "parent plant" residing in the local Museum..

It is over 100 yrs old.. I've never known of fruit from it.. but the only times I've ever seen it bloom it was inside..

I have had difficulty finding info on it as there are quite a few plants called Night Blooming Cereous apparently..

it doesn't have the tri leaves that dragon fruit have though..

Here are cuttings..

I do not believe that these are the same as dragon fruit night blooming cereous..
It has been frustrating trying to find CLEAR info on them..

Anyone know for sure???

After getting a CONFIRMED botanical name for it I searched for the botanical name and found on wikipedia about the plant....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epiphyllum

Quote:
The fruit is edible, very similar to the pitaya fruit from the closely related genus Hylocereus, though not so large, being only 3-4 cm long.

Do you still want it???

Wow Gina, that plant pictured is a 100 yrs old!? Must be a baby off of a baby etc. I never heard of night blooming cereus, but the leaves look a lot different than dragon fruit - too flat & not cactus looking.
Garnet, are we on for dragon fruit for your mahoi banana? USPS has a thing now that you pay one rate for a box & shipping - no matter what weight, for like $4.75 or so (?). I can pack much more stuff in there LOL.
I sent you a pm few days ago to let you know what else I have to give...let me know what you want or don't. BTW, I just looked at the lemon grass you gave me & it just soared up...seems about 4ft now!!!!
It's in the ground so I'll have to dig it up in another couple months Sad , or can it take winter here in zone 5? (I don't think so?)

Hi Garnet,
Based on what I found on the net --some are Hylocereus undatus, but some appear to be from a different genus (such as Epiphyllum oxypetalum and Cereus grandiflorus). The Cerus grandiflorus page had this note as well:

---Medicinal Action and Uses---Diuretic Sedative, Cardiac. Cereus has been used as a cardiac stimulant and as a partial substitute for digitalis. In large doses it produces gastric irritation, slight delirium, hallucinations and general mental confusion. It is said to greatly increase the renal secretion. It does not appear to weaken the nervous system. It has a decided action on the heart and frequently gives prompt relief in functional or organic disease. It has been found of some service in haemoptysis, dropsy and incipient apoplexy.

Patty,
I was told it was over 100 yrs old.. and I don't tend to argue with little old ladies.. At the very least over 60 yrs old as that was how long she had it.. If I remember right it was her grandma that gave it to her.. and her grandma had gotten it when she was in her late teens early 20s..
She kept it in her beauty salon for about 30 yrs (I think).. It was in a North window and the humidity in there was very high.. you could tell her salon because of the foggy windows.. The plant always looked so straggly.. but the blooms.. so beautiful and sweet smelling!!!
would you like one too Patty?? I do need more to trade TO you..

Thanks Skeeter!

common names are nice, but scientific names are better. I was going off some common-name info on the web. Oops!

Awe thanks Gina, I have too many plants now & I don't know much about cereus (I never heard of it before LOL).
Garnet, isn't thai lime the lime tree that you use the leaves in cooking?
I would love some of those seeds along with mahoi banana!! Very Happy I just got some fresh Etrog seeds today, I'll send you some if you want- along with dragon fruit. I don't need any seeds or seedlings thanks - EXCEPT for thai lime! I should prolly send the dragon F. & seeds now so the seeds are fresh. Let me know...PM me with your mail addy too.
