A friend brought me 5 macadamia nuts/seeds from his vacation. Apparently they take 8-12 years to fruit from seed and the nut quality is variable. I think I'll try anyway. Has anyone else tried macadamia from seed? Robert |

Robert, Macadamia seeds germinate very slowly, so don't give up on them. The tree also grows very slowly. I believe Macadamia is in the Protea family. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained. - Millet |

I removed the husk, soaked for 24 hours, planted in Promix at a depth 2 times the seed size.
I'm a little worried, though. The greenhouse has been nice and warm for the last week or two, but we seem to have a cold snap now for the next week or so. Hopefully they won't rot. SB |

Millet is right; it takes quite some time to get these to sprout. I soaked my seeds almost 3 days and had them on a heat mat in a propagation chamber for about 2 months before I saw any sign of life. Out of curiosity I tried to crack open one of the seeds w/ a crab leg plier, broke the plier and never got the shell open! In any case it's an interesting plant with spiney leaves. Here's a pic of one of the seedlings:

Your tree looks wonderful.
Did you only soak the seeds before planting?
Did you do any scarifying?

I know someone will cringe,,,,,, but I got mine on ebay. It is someone I have one business with before ( and will be again), when I bought a whole array of flower seeds.
The kind I got is integrifolia, so it has the smooth shell. I want to also get tetraphylla (the rough shell) too.
I just read that you can have a batch of seeds and they can start to show seedlings at 4-6 weeks and some can take up to 6 months. I further read that you do not want to crack the shell due to possible to injure the embryo or it can rot before it can germinate. So I guess that patience will be a requirement for this one.
If you want to know who I ordered from, let me know.

The seedling is about one month old since germination. I only soaked the seeds in water and did not scarify them although it probably wouldn't hurt to try that too. My seeds were from friends that vacationed in Hawaii. Good luck w/ your seeds. |
