Laaz, I noticed that you said that you are bringing in you Canary Island Date palm. Is it not hardy to zone 8? (That’s what I read.)
I've been eying one at Home Depot. It's good size and about not cheap. But, I would have to put it into the ground. Would it be better to get one of the other date palms that you have in your yard if I wanted a date palm?

Hi Terry. That is Patty that brings her CIDP in the house. CIDP's do great in our area. There are some in downtown Charleston that are massive (70-80 ft). The two date palms that that do not do well here are the Pigmy date & Cliff date palms. I just got a bunch of seedling Senegals that I will experiment with next year...

Great palm Benny. The tall one is some type of Trachycarpus. The one next to the mailbox is not a palm, but a Yucca.

Thanks Laaz.
I am enchanted by palm trees. they reminnd me of the tropics.
One of the sensie (karate teacher) visitors thought my backyard is a tropical jungle. And he likes it.

I hate to bring this very bad news. Southern California's palms as well as most parts of California are being attacked by some pests and fungal diseases are dying from the inside out. The city planners are no longer replanting palm trees but instead are replanting with California native plants like oak trees. They argued that palms are non-native and so why replace with something that will only be susceptible to the same problems? But one thing for sure, this is destroying the image of Palms associated with the beaches of Southern California. We have several year old palm trees in Davis that are also dying from similar or the same diseases.

Joe:

I had no idea the problem was so serious and widespread.
A few days ago, I was talking to an arborist and she said
that if a palm is trimmed by cutting the fronds too close,
the wound will get infected with pink rot. Then it is only
a matter of time for it to die.
