Cute seedling although it reminds me a lot of:
Hopefully you get it grafted before it starts singing and takes over your house |

That was good Eyeckr! Only you woulda thought of that LOL.
They redid that movie in 80's? I only know the original from late 50's -early 60's with just-starting Jack Nickolsen...getting his teeth pulled by the crazy dentist.
The Little Cado is doing well. The rootstock (Haas) now has 4 more branches to graft 4 more varieties on! _________________ Patty

here is cover from the original 60s movie..
I never knew it was a remake.. they turned it in to a musical.. from what I was reading the original was not a musical..
1986 was the version Eyeckr posted pic from..
Well... Audrey III is doing just fine!!
I have 3 others that have since split.. no tongues yet though.. LOL
glad yours is branching out for you.. last avocado i was growing it pinched the top and found it a new home shortly after that.. but it didn't live at it's new home..

Here's a pic of my Avo seeds. One on left (Reed) was planted exactly 4 weeks before this pic. That's Hass on right (1/4th size)- planted 2 weeks before reed so I just chucked it - not doing anything.
It's a little dark, but w/flash was a white out.
Mine always open on bottom first (see the root hanging out), while yours Gina, seem to open at top first. (?)
I have both of these 1 yr old now & they are same size. Will check roots in spring to see if potting up needed. When seed roots ar long enough, will put it in 4X4X14" tall pot. _________________ Patty

That is interesting Patty.. All of the seeds I've ever done have opened from the top.. I take that back.. I have one right now that is opening from the bottom..
maybe upside down seeds?? the one I have that is opening from the bottom is very round and I might have put it in upside down..
I usually keep the pointy end up..
WOW the size of that seed!!! bout same size as haas.. makes haas seed look like midget..
I have taken pics of Audrey.. but I'm on dialup right now and am not sure I'm going to get them to upload.. I tried the other day and it kept having errors..
If I can get these to upload I'll post them.. starting to look more like Eyeckr's pic.. no talking or dancing though...

Hi Bengy, Are they 1/4 inch wide stems? Even if less, you could do it now ..it will just be a little more difficult. As long as the scion is same size. Try it just below a branch tip, & if it doesn't take, it will grow more branches. Hard to tell how big your seedlings are. Are you going to try to graft your older bacon (I think it was bacon?) to the seedling? That would be best. Or, just practice amongst your seedlings.
I have T budded citrus on 1/8 stock & it took. Just makes it a little harder to handle. On my Avo, seedling stock was 1/4 inch & I did a whip & tongue that took. You could also try a T Bud too. Good luck _________________ Patty

Bengy, sorry I asked the same quest you already posted. They don't HAVE to be 1/4 inch, it's just easier, esp for beginners (like me!). Like I said, I T Budded citrus onto 1/8 inch rootstock & it took. Go ahead and do a graft! If I were you, I'd do whip & tongue...leaving out the tongue (I've done that too on Fig) since it's less than 1/4". Just make nice even cuts & tape it up well. Leave 2-3 buds untaped. If it doesn't take, you will get 2 -3 more branches growing from it (part that was cut). Oh geeze, does this make sense? Ask more if it doesn't & maybe someone else can help. Please keep me posted how it goes OK? The hardest part is doing the first one!... Then you'll say "that was easy".
Gina, I bet you will surely make up on posts when your DSL kicks in LOL.
My avo is just coming above seed with lots of big roots. Yours is 9 inches!!!!?? How big are the roots? I'll bet when I get it potted up, it will really take off. And then what? I already have 2 Avo seedlings with one grafted on, & 4 more branches. Maybe I can sell it at yard sale this summer after grafting?!! _________________ Patty

Thanks again Patty for your helpful advice...Those seedlings are hass, wurtz & few unknown ones (green smooth skin w/ big seeds). I'll do the grafting among the seedlings just for experiment & will use hass as rootstocks. I'll graft wurtz & the unknown ones onto it. I won't touch my inground grafted hass & grafted potted bacon, unless i could find some woods from matured fruiting trees somewhere?? |
