Lazz, There are some silver saw palms across from my daughter's home in Daytona. She is going to watch them and collect some seed when they get ripe. The green ones are not right around my home, but there are plenty in the area.

You should plan to go to one of the Southeastern Palm Society's meetings. The one held a the Bamboo Farm and Coastal Gardens is fairly close (near Savannah) and they have quite a few unusual palms planted there. Also, Gary Hollar almost always brings a load of palms to sell. I am sure he would bring anything he has, on request. Fact is, the next meeting will be held near Gary's place (which is near Wilmington, NC), with a visit scheduled to his nursery.

Thanks Ned. The Silvers are hard to get here as you know.

For anyone unfamiliar with the Saw palm (Serenoa repens) here is a nice site on them. Very hardy shrub palms.

Here is a picture of the palmetto on my lot in Alabama. The fruit are still green, but there are plenty of them.

I also have a few cabbage palm fruits, but they are still green as well.

Thanks Skeeter. Are you sure those are Saw palms & not Sabal minors ? When they are small they look very much alike. Saw palm grow a short trunk, minors rarely have any trunk at all.

Lazz, they may be-- I am not a palm expert. There is a little trunk, but I looked on the internet at both and the fruits may be the easiest distinction. The Sabal minor (and the one in my picture) both seem to have round fruits while the Saw Palmetto has a more elongated fruit.

are you still looking for Washingtonia (what you called california palms which are bigger than mexican variety) we have several in our area and they grow wild/native in the springs at the edges of the mountains. I'd be glad to round up a few for you.
Arthur

Hi Arthur. Yes if you can get the real thing. Washingtonia Filifera. Most sold as Filifera are actually hybrid with the Robusta.

Hi Laaz, I have 2 cabbage palms grown from seed. The person that gave me seeds (6 yrs ago) said that cabbage is also called sabal. Is that true?

I'll see what I can scrounge up. I'll choose a site where there are lots of Washingtonia and no Mexican to be seen. Can't garintee the wind won't carry pollen but I think they will be pure.
About 100 or so seeds right?

OK, I found you a nice cluster of seeds. I didn't see any Mexican around. Just be aware, to get a really big trunk, they need to be gowning in the ground and have very consistent water. Growing in pots will stunt them. These are actually still on the branch with the tiny bit of fruit meat still on them.
Where would you like them sent? I'll trust you to send me a couple of dollars to cover the postage. Send me an email at softmentor@netzero.com with your mailing address and I'll get them on their way, or mail me the info at:
Arthur Futterman
PO Box 1384
Indio CA 92202.
Also I have this year's fresh date crop for sale if you are interested. Varieties of fruit I have are:
Abada - $3.90 per pound
Amir Hajj - $3.90 per pound
Barhi - yellow - $3.50 (last shipping day will be Monday 9/15)
Barhi - juicy - $4.50 per pound
Barhi - dry - $4.50 per pound
Dayri - $3.50 per pound
Deglet Noor - $3.50 per pound
Medjool - Jumbo - $5.25 per pound
Medjool - Extra Fancy - $4.25 per pound
Zahidi - $3.75 per pound

We also have the following varieties but are sold out for this year 2008.
Khalasa
Samany
Halawi
Khadrawi

All orders for 11 pounds or more are $0.50 per pound discount.
All orders are plus shipping from Indio California USA.
Barhi dates may be ordered "yellow", "juicy" or "dry". Yellow is still crunchy like an apple, and is still fresh like a grape, not dry like a raisin. Juicy is where they have just turned ripe (brown) still have a lot of syrup, and are very very soft. Juicy Barhi will be pressed into a "cake" or a block. Dry are still a little bit soft but are dry enough that they will keep their shape better as they ship.
