There are quite a few different fruits called cherry, but I have not heard anything great about any of them besides ornamental value.

I had a Cherry of the Rio Grande. The fruit is mostly seed, and the pulp is very bland, quite tasteless. I chucked the tree long ago. - Millet

Yes, Australian beach cherry, Cherry of the Rio Grande, Barbados Cherry, Surinam Cherry etc... I wouldn't mind trying the fruit, but I have not heard a whole lot of good reports to the fruit quality.

Laaz, I also hat a Barbados Cherry, Surinam Cherry, which I got from Citrus Joe. They both are worthless for eating. They went the same way as the Rio Grand. - Millet
