Every year I report, with a little surprise, that Seville oranges have arrived again in my local shops. 'Surprise' because I'm amazed to think that there are still enough people making their own marmalade to justify selling these fruits all over the UK.
I make my own marmalade - and it tastes wonderful. Far, far better than any of the many brands I have tried over the years. Why the commercial manufacturers can't match it, I really don't know. It's just fruit and sugar boiled together. Simple and simply delicious!

I would like to try my hand at making marmalade, as I have never cared for the store bought stuff. I have never seen any Seville oranges in the stores her in Georgia, what might be a good substitute? Also I need a recipe and instructions on preparation. I made some Quince preserves this year for the first time, I had to grow my own quince trees to get fruit as it is a forgotten fruit here, from what I hear from the old timers is that every one had a quince tree in their yard in the early 1900"s It was really good, well worth the effort.

Asda (Walmart's UK subsiduary) has either loose or netted Sevilles available before Christmas for a very short period. Suppose waitrose are getting them on fruiting main season.

Question in Georgia is what acid citrus fruits do you have available to make marmalade from?

If you have calamondin as a doorstep tree , it makes good marmalade. If you only have sweet oranges add some lemon.

Check your nearest Whole Foods. I just bought 12 seville oranges for $2/lb. They are from California.

It's a shame they aren't available elsewhere! You sent me a couple of those oranges last year and I loved eating them fresh!

I have several nice seedlings from the seeds! I love the scent of the leaves. Seville orange is one of my favorite citrus!

Hey, I found the Seville oranges on line. The Orange Shop in Citra, Fl. has them for sale online. I ordered a quarter bu. that should be plenty.

Does anyone grow these Seville oranges or know where I could get scion wood? How do you tell the Seville from other sour oranges? I remember we have had this discussion before. I think?

The seville oranges from California are not nearly as sour as the typical sour orange rootstock fruit. The Texas sour oranges can't be sweetened with any amount of sugar. I'm growing some out from seed.

Four Winds sells the Seville, Bouquet de Fleurs, and Bergamot sour oranges. I have one of each in large pots on the south patio. I, too, love, love, love marmalade. Grew up eating it every morning on my toast in Canada as a kid (grandparents were Scottish, they loved, it, parents loved, it and we kids loved it). I plan on making my own marmalades with each, and using other citrus mixed in. With the Bergamot, it needs something sweet added to it, so additional sweet oranges or mandarins will go in that marmalade. I have about 8 or 9 Bergamots ripening right now, so my first batch will be coming up, soon! And yes, huge fan of Earl Grey tea of course Very Happy

Does Four Winds sell seville grafted on a rootstock? Here, seville is usually sold as a rootstock, which is unfortunate because those rootstocks are still too young to flower...

You may be able to get 2-3year old grafts from Adavo.

Serj

Adavo are good value. 11Plants to UK for 4000czech crowns (about 180euro).

He has plants we just cannot get in UK, only problem is how long they take to get through customs in UK. It can take longer to do that bit than to get from czech republic to UK.

Always impressed when plants arrive, quite large and sometimes in fruit.
