As promised, here are the details on the Southeastern Citrus Expo that is to be held on Nov.18th 2006. The event in its 4th year will take place at the Virginia Beach Aquarium located at 717 General Booth Blvd, Virginia Beach, Virginia. The first session is slated to begin around 10 am and will be on the subject of growing citrus in containers. Speaker for this segment is Bob Koch of Colorado. There will be a citrus fruit contest with all the categories just as in years past. This will be conducted in a seperate room there at the facility. The second session will begin after a lunch break and will feature information on growing citrus in ground in areas north of the citrus belt. Speakers for this program will be Ned Rahn of Port Royal, SC and Stan McKenzie of Scranton, SC. After the announcment of the winners, the Expo will move to Pungo Palms Nursery where host Ralph and Kathy Denton will show off their citrus plantings. There will be a plant sale conducted at the Dentons for anyone wishing to purchase some of those hard to find citrus plants... also available will be other rare and unsusual plants. Shuttle tours of Mr Robert Montyca's citrus orchard will be conducted thru out the day. Mr Montyca probably owns one of the largest and most fruitful citrus collections to be found outside of the deep South. The day should be packed full of fun and plenty of citrus info for everyone.
For those in areas south of Virginia Beach who would like to join a rolling Citruholics convention, I have contacted Sunway Tours of Myrtle Beach, SC and they will provide bus transportation to and from the Expo. The cost is just 105 dollars per person and includes pick up in Charleston SC, Florence SC and Fayetteville, NC. The 105 price is for two people to a room and the Best Western Hotel is the facility we will be staying in. All rooms are ocean front and Sunway will be providing transportation to and from the Expo. Sunway will begin picking up passengers at Charleston around 8:30 am on Friday the 17th. We will arrive in Va Bch around 3 pm . The return trip will leave Va Bch around 5 pm that Saturday and arrive back in Charleston around 11:30 pm. Hi garnetmoth, I will look forward to meeting you at this years Expo. A bunch of us usually get together the Friday Night before the Expo on Saturday and go out for a meal somewhere. Last year there were probably 20 or more of us hardcore citruholics sitting at one table! Bring your hubby along and we may convert him to a "citruholic" before the night is over!

I would agree it would be great to meet a lot of people on this forum @ the Expo.

Jerry is more suited to tomatoes- dont need a bunch of attention, water, eat.

The dinner is NOT for planning purposes, the planning has long ago been completely done. The dinner, usually the night before the Expo, is just a fun gathering of cituholics. The 20 or so of us that attended the dinner last year are still talking about the wonderful time we had. The expo is also a once a year opportunity for people to purchase unique, rare and hard to find citrus varieties generally not available to the public at local nurseries. Last year Citrus Joe and I purchased 5 trees at the expo, then took them back home to Colorado with us ON THE AIRPLANE - Millet

I'll tell ya Garnet, you've never met such a nice bunch of people! I too bought plants - & wasn't going to. Me & Citrus Joe had to buy a large duffle bag for plants as a carry on. And then, of course there were the seeds & cuttings we collected from unusual plants. I learned a lot at the expo with all those knowledgable people. Was a great time. Will you be staying at your friend's house?

My Mini van comfortably seats 6 + Luggage.. no roof luggage rack though.. If we pack light enough we could even fit trees in it.. that is how I brought home my first Meiwa Kumquat..

SOUTHEAST CITRUS EXPO 2006

The Southeast Citrus Exposition is now into its forth year. Its purpose is to encourage citrus growing outside the commercial citrus belt for both the home gardener and the serious enthusiast. This year’s Expo will feature expert speakers who will provide information on growing cold-hardy citrus in the Southeast United States. Topics that will be discussed will be: in ground or container culture, advice on choosing citrus, cold protection, grafting and selection of root stock, as well as other topics. The Expo will include a citrus fruit contest, plant sale, and tours of citrus trees growing in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Plants for Raffle will be donated by the Expo coordinators & vendors. These will include: cold-hardy citrus, cold-hardy palms, and other rare plants.

Fruit Competition Rules and Procedures


Fruit Preparation

All fruit entered must be grown by the entrant, either in a container or in the ground.

Before submission, fruit should be washed and prepared for eating. Remove any
pesticide residue. Judges may have to taste fruit in case of a tie.

A minimum of three fruit of a specific cultivar must be donated per entry: for example, three Satsuma fruit are required to qualify as one entry. One of the fruit must be cut in half “against the grain (as you would cut a grapefruit} to show the inside of the fruit. (See the illustration above for an example.) Fruit can be returned at the request of the entrant.

Fruit must contain at least ½” of stem attached. One fruit should have at least leaf attached to the stem.

Check the category sheet to determine proper entry.


At the Expo

Entries must be submitted between 9:00AM and 10:00 AM. After 10:00AM
entries will not be accepted.

At registration, you will be given an entry number to ensure anonymity. Make sure that you keep this number with you until the award ceremony.

An entry card must be filled out for each entry. Be sure that you put your entry
number on each card.

Viewing of the fruit will take place from 12:00 to 1:00PM

Blue, red, and white ribbons will be awarded for each category. In addition, there will be a “Best in Show, “Honorable Mention”, and “Most Unusual” award.

Where is Pungo Palms Nursery from the Aquarium? Will they be selling plants at the expo, or do we have to go there before 9a.m.?
Is Marsh Pavillion in same building as Aquarium? Where is Atlantic Ocean Pavilion’s Promenade Room? Walking distance?
When is a good time to tour the aquarium with such a full day?

Pungo Palms is about 10 miles from the Aquarium -probably about a 15min drive. Pungo Palms to Dr Motyca's is about a 30 min drive; Aquarium to Dr Motyca's is about a 15 min drive.

The plant sale will be located @ Pungo Palms. We were unable to set up the sale of plants @ the Aquarium due to city tax restrictions. The sale is scheduled for early morning and end of the day.

All of the rooms mentioned are walking distance, but it might be easier to drive to the other buildings.

You're right about having time to tour the Aquarium. Maybe that could be something to do for other friends or family members who came along that are not interested in the Expo.

I am hoping that someone who is attending will take lots of pictures to share. I am green with envy!!!
