Karoly your apples are that red already? Here apples are not usually ready until after the first frost. Well up north at least, I have not found any apples very good here in the south.

Laaz, my early apples are harvested already here in S. California. That would be my Dorsett Golden and my Anna. I have typical later fall apples as well, my Fuji, Red Fuji and Pink Lady, but my early apples ripen up by June/July. My Anna that is in mostly shade is a wee bit later than the Anna in the full sun, so still picking a few Annas. Have you tried some of the low chill varieties we grow here? Another great couple of choices are Beverly Hills as well as William's Pride. Here's the later Anna:

And that fuzz you see in the second photo? Due to a pair of House Finches that built a little nest in the top of this espaliered Anna. Look closely and you can see a very pretty nest. That's actually dog hair from grooming my Aussies here on the side yard. The mother finch lined her nest with it, very cozy:

Thanks for the update Patty. To me the early apple don't have the flavor of the late apple.

You would think that, but the Dorsett Golden has one of the finest flavors of any apple. And the Annas are also well thought of. They are very, very good and can hold their own with any late apple. Taste tests done out there by varying groups consistently rank the Dorsett Golden in the top 10 to 20 apples out there. Try it, you might like it! Very Happy

Nothing as spectacular as what some of you show off here, but I'm still happy to have a little room to grow some citrus plants! Very Happy

I took those shots with the fish eye lens (with some correction applied), that way you get the impression of a large area! Laughing

Thanks Marc. We fortunately live in an area of S Calif where one can still afford to have a little property. You've done a great job fitting in your citrus in your yard which is pretty big fora city yard.

Gotcha! Laughing
Like I said, using a fish eye lens makes it appear large, but in fact it is a very small garden! Wink

Spring and summer have been nothing to write home about with plenty of rain and rather chilly temperatures, but we just had a nice week with lots of sun and temperatures up to 30°C/86°F Smile

What Europeans call their garden, Americans call it a back yard. For Americans a garden is where one grows vegetables.- Millet
