This lemon tree is approximately 40 years old, planted by a family friend (now deceased) well before we bought this farm in 1994. I've pruned this tree to decrease it's height as well as prevent it rubbing against my house when the wind blows. It's never had any variegated growth in the past. Today I was picking lemons from the tree and at about 12' from the ground I noticed this variegated branch. I don't know the variety but it is moderately thorny so I'm guessing it's not Eureka since Eureka is described by UCR as being "virtually thornless". I get poked and scratched up every time I pick lemons. New growth on typical branches is dark red. This young branch hasn't fruited yet.

Harvey that looks very close to my Sungold variegated Lisbon lemon. Very nice. Let me know when I can get a budstick. Razz

Yes,

If new growth is dark red or purple, I also believe it to be a Lisbon Lemon. Nice!

Dark red (sort of purple) coloration on the new flush of growth has nothing to do with the variety.
Almost all lemons develop purple shoots when the night temps are down low at night.

My experience: All lemons (except zagara bianca) and some other citruses have purple new growth and buds, when on direct sunlight.

Most lemons produce a purple new growth, as does my Sungold.

Hence the conclusion,
most, not all, and not all the time. Smile

As I said almost all - scroll a bit upwards, and yes Sylvain it seems to be true, although I couldn't find exact reference to the article to back it up. Besides, you don't have to feel sorry for learning something new. We're all humans, after all. Next time try not to follow our Austrian fellow, and please care to elaborate your thoughts why you think it is or in this case isn't true. I found your previous post quite offensive.

Thanks Wink

Early spring flush tends to get that purple coloration on most of the lemons I have...

For reference, my Sungold (Lisbon) & variegated Eureka produce the purple flushes. They also produce purple flower buds.

My Femminello only produces purple flower buds, but green new growth.

Sorry Igor I didn't see your answer before. No, no! It was just a joke. You can see I put a smiley.
Indeed with "almost all" you are right.
And please don't speak of the "Austrian fellow". You could make him come back... Laughing

Sorry for the size of the picture. I cannot change it because it is not mine.
