Simple question but probably hard to answer... if you only had room for one single citrus plant, what would it be?
Maybe I should add a second question at once... which one are you absolutely not interested in?
At this time my most favorite citrus is the seville orange. Not for the fruits as my plants are still too young to fruit. But I love the scent when the plant is touched!
Least favorite... could be the kumquat. I couldn't care less about kumquats! _________________ - Marc

Favorite - Xie Shan
Worst - anything with Poncirus in its history.
However, if I could only have just one tree, I might plant a variety other than a favorite.

I have to say Xie Shan is my favorite because of their taste. Meyer Lemon blossoms smell the best to me. I think that is what really got me hooked ! I don't know any I don't like. There are still plenty I don't know too well. It seems that some of them don't like me .....Tom _________________ Tom in central Alabama |

My favorite (by far): Lemon tree.
Talking about fruits (all, not just citrus): 1. oranges, 2. mandarines, 3. many _________________

I could also make a choice based on what grows best here, or based on what is the preferred fruit.
The best growing / producing plant I have is the tahiti lime. Grows vigorous but controllable, produces many flowers and easily sets fruits. The meyer lemon is about the same, as is the eustis limequat.
But then I'm not a big fan of limes, meyer lemons aren't as good as true lemons, and limequats... well, they're just plain acid with not much taste and they aren't juicy either (at least not here...).
I love oranges as a fruit, and I manage to grow some each season. Unfortunately their taste is no good.
The bergamot could be a good choice. Easily sets fruit and I actually like the taste of it. The plant has a nice scent also. Yes, the bergamot might be the right choice for me. Together with the seville orange, that is! _________________ - Marc

That one is hard to beat. Perhaps budwood available? _________________

I've top worked three trees into Xie Shan about a year ago based on your previous recommendations. I'm eager to get some fruit and possibly top working a dozen more trees if it's as good as everyone says it is.

Another vote for Ponkan, although the one and only King that I've had definitely measured up. |

Looks like many of you are 'mandarin lovers'! How would you describe the taste of your preferred mandarin?
Personally I'm not really into mandarins. Like with all citrus, the only mandarins I can find are those from the market. The mandarins from the market are usually too sweet for me. They contain too little acid for a good flavor balance. Good for kids maybe, but not for me!
That's another advantage of growing your own citrus... you can eat the fruits when you think the flavor is right! _________________ - Marc

OK I have to confess that whatever is ripe and in my hand is my favorite right now
BUT
After this year it may be the XIE Shan as I have several trees with a decent crop load.
I still haven't had any Ponkon so it will be in the running too.
Hamlin and Sunburst are my favorites right now and have produced good flavored fruit.
If you'd said juiced I go with my seedless pink grapefruit. Straight up without any sweetner of any kind. I have a half gallon left and that is it for about 16 mos. No crop this year. _________________ Charles in Pensacola

Darkman, normally mandarins and satsumas do not produce high quality fruit until the trees are 5 - 10 years of age. Still their firsts fruits can be acceptable. - Millet. |

If I could only have one tree I'm with Ivica, would have to be a lemon.
But my favorite is Poncirus because of it's beauty and unique hardiness that offers such breeding dreams to those of us that are way outside of citrus country. |
