I had 21F at my house last night, very windy.
Last night also received first snow of the season and the small pond in my front yard froze over for the first time.

Its like someone flipped a Winter switch as it has been pretty mild here up till now.

The temperature dropped to 36F last night here although fortunately it did level off after midnight and rose to 38F by 6 AM. There was frost on the grass though. The low temperatures were 20F or more below normal for early January!
The temperature dropped to 24F last night in some spots just north and west of lake Okeechobee.

The high yesterday was only 57F and very very windy.

Dropped to 20F here at my farm. I had all of the citrus trees in the grove covered with ice or bagged in large plastic bags with mirco sprinklers underneath. I think this is the best way to protect citrus from cold.. The 60F water keeps the trees nice and toasty under the plastic bags. I checked this morning and no ice formation inside the bags. Trees appear to be in good shape!

31 degrees here (only for about two hours) and it fried all my Banana leaves (had two bunches hanging). I'm sure there was no citrus damage. I looked this afternoon and did not see any damage but I'll check every day for a while. All my Jalapenos also fried. They were starting to look like small bushes.

The cold blast this week came straight down from Siberia to the east coast and Florida. Texas was protected by high pressure which pushed the cold air east and far south. The low temperatures in Cuba were 40sF!

The low recorded at my property in Homestead, Florida was 36 F around midnight and then the temperature actually rose to 38 F by sun rise. There was actually a very small pocket of very very cold air with temperature around 15F west of lake Okeechobee. Most places in that area recorded lows in the upper 20s F to low 30s F though.

It was actually colder in Homestead, Florida than it was in Dallas, Texas Tuesday night!

New York City had a low of only 13F! The interior areas of the Northeast were even colder with temperatures in the single digits.

For what its worth, here in the northwest winter has been nonexistent. Most of my potted citrus has been left outside (so far) Even my potted palms are still on the deck. We have had a number of good frosts through the 1st 1/2 of December down to -3c (28f ?) over night. I put the Christmas lights on my Meyer lemon to protect the fruit from freezing. I did have some leaf damage on a Bearrs lime which was left out.

Maybe I just jinxed myself - hopefully not. The next 4 weeks will be critical.

Good luck and a happy New Year to all the citrus growers!

Greg

We haven't had much of a winter either. It was back in the 70's again today.

Here in Bennett, Colorado it has frozen solid 99 percent of every night since about November 18th. It will continue freezing nightly until approximately the 10th of March. So far the heating of my greenhouse has gone through 2,496 gallons of propane, with still two more months of cold weather to go. Presently it is snowing, with the next storm predicted in 4 days. Winter is my second favorite season, with Fall my favorite, Summer is my least favorite. However, every day is Summer inside my greenhouse. - Millet (373 ABO-)

I did not know Colorado was that cold! Colorado is not famous for cold weather like Minnesota, the Dakotas and New England.

What are the average low temperatures for January and for the winter in Colorado?
