Last yr I had a flower that was bigger than the cactus! They sure are pretty. Looks like a baby growing in center of cactus

Now THOSE I would try eating...after I smoke some of Scott's Pomello leaves. What a beautiful cactus! I would not eat my flower before it blooms...bloom is too pretty. Besides, before the flower blooms, it looks furry. _________________ Patty

ok.. can't resist temptation any more........................
Peyote.. y'all been out smokin Peyote in the Hogan again!! LOL
Peyote is a cactus smoked for religious purposes in the Navajo culture..
I grew up with "you been out smokin peyote in the Hogan?" as opposed to other referrals of "been out smokin wildwood weed again?" as a response to a ridiculous comment or action..
Just to add a bit of cactus twist here.. LOL
Smoked cactus.. would you have ever thought of it?? Teenagers would.. LOL I don't know that peyote is actually smoked, as what I was told was it was boiled.. But smokin Peyote was the way teens put the term..
I have seen one Peyote cactus before.. a dear old friend was telling me of Navajo customs and showed me the cactus.. But in all the yrs living in NM that was the ONLY one I ever saw.. and I did LOTS of BLM (gov. land)hiking..
Sad that a cactus is on the brink of extinction because it causes hallucinations.. and Like every thing else in that desert country it takes it's sweet time to get mature.. So reproduction is not keeping up with demand...
Info on Peyote incase you want to join Navajo religion..

I responded before I read the link so it's erased. Gina, what do you mean it is 'smoked'? Like weed?
I didn's see the word "masculine" there, but my cactus has to be cuz it grew furry _________________ Patty

Hey Patty,
As you know I LOVE cactus and cactus flowers. You've seen my house and greenhouse. I am always interested in what kind of cactus other people get to flower. Any idea what kind yours is?
I think I have it narrowed down to three, but not completely sure.
How big is the plant itself? Do you know how old it is?
I have a bunch of different kinds flowering right now. I REALLY wish I had a digital camara, I would so love to show you the Stapelia gigantea that is flowering. The flower is the size and shape of a starfish and smells like rotting flesh. It gets pollinated by flies. So cool!
Keep up the good work girl!

mind you what I heard from the Medicine man was it was boiled and ingested..
what the TEEN rumor was.... mind you this was rumor flying around at parties in the 80s.... some kids heard about peyote and they were the type that would smoke anything *yes like weed*,, and they found some peyote sliced it up dried it out and smoked it in a pipe.. something about one of them went crazy and did a bunch of stupid stuff.. but honestly the "rumor" is a bit fuzzy in my memory and it was just a rumor..
In the 80s in Farmington there was a lot of controversy about peyote.. it was an old method to converse with the spirit world.. they practice dropped off till late 70s early 80s.. So it could be that the rumor was caused by the unrest over the cactus and it's use.. that it was a religious pratice and protected by law..
Well hubby just let me know that it was smoked... he knew a couple of guys that smoked it one got in a fight with him and gave him a concussion..
So yes.. dried and smoked in a pipe..

yes Farmington, N.M.
Cool!! very beautiful land..
What direction???
It has been 14+ yrs since I moved here.. But unless you work oil field you can't hardly make a real living there..
I spent every summer in La Plata canyon hiking for a week and then another week traveling with my grandparents around Colorado.. Miss the traveling with my grandparents.. Lots of WONDERFUL scenery to see.. mountains to desert...
I still make it back now and then but usually weekend trips with my brother.. never enough time to stop and smell the cactus flowers..
