I was out looking for ornamentals and caught a glimpse of citrus flowers. I took a closer look and found two ~3yr bushy meyer lemons labeled only "specimen tree" in pots for $50. Never seen anything like this in this area, I ad to dig through the foliage to find a tiny "meyer lemon" ribbon tag half buried under the dirt.
No care info or anything, I wonder if they were destined for some other state and got mixed up? Everything else was prominently labelled. It'd be nice if they start selling more varieties as the only other place in the area that cells citrus is an exotic plant shop which charges that much for 1yr citripots. |

I went out to Lowe's here to see what Citrus they had and there were 5 - 3ft tall varigated Eureka lemon trees at $49.95 with lemons on them and growing. Lowe's is the only place I have found in and around the Minneapolis, Mn area that has Citrus plants on occasion _________________

3 years ago I bought 3 - 1 gallon meyer lemons for $20 each from Home Depot. I planted them in the ground and they have done well - albeit with lots of TLC through the winter. It got down to 10f this past winter.... Go get it before it ends up in someone else's hands!

The Loews across the street from my work in Rolling Meadows, Illinois (15-20 miles West of Chicago) also is selling variegated Eureka's for 49.99. They initially had about 5 or 6 a month or so ago and I talked to a guy there who said they would probably get more in after Mother's Day and possibly more varieties. I haven't been back in a week or so and I think they still have one left that I might get suckered into... I'd love to get it but I have a few trees comming from Four Winds any day now and I don't think I'll have the room for another tree None of the Home Depot's by me have any citrus, only Loews so far. |

I bought a Meyer at the local Home Depot last year and this year they have Var. Eureka and Owari.
I had to buy an Owari.
Still thinking about the V. Eureka- they were pretty.
No citrus at our Lowes.

I seen a Grapefruit at a Home Depot in Aurora, Colorado four or five years ago. I have never again seen another citrus tree in a Colorado Home Depot. Which Home Depot did you see this tree? Normally, I purchase all my trees out of California, but from time to time I have purchased citrus from Mike at Paulio Gardens in Denver. - Millet (1,332-) |

If your were in Greeley, you must have been visiting Citrus Joe. I am the person who originally tagged him with the moniker "Citrus Joe". Over the years, Joe has collected quite a few citrus varieties. It is amazing how many trees he can get into that small greenhouse, and they generally all look pretty good. The last I heard, he was going to sell off many of his citrus trees, and go into other types of tropicals. Joe is a nice guy. - Millet (1,332-) |

Yes, Joe is a friend of mine.
About 2 years ago I saw an arcticle in our local paper about him. I already had an interest in tropical fruiting plants so I contacted him.
Here I am now, a daily student of gardening forums, approx 50 more plants, an indoor lighting system for overwintering plants and a garage full of media for experiments in soiless container mixes.
He still has a greenhouse that almost requires a machete to traverse.
He is still trying to downsize but I am starting to understand how hard that is to do.

Hi Everyone..
Here in Santa Fe , NM I have never seen any Citrus
trees sold at Lowe's , Home Depot I've seen the same
Kumquat tree , ratty looking and full of bugs for the
past three months , I mentioned it to the person in
charge of the greenhouse area and she just shrugged
her shoulders like " what do you want me to do about it."
Home Depot here has a bad reputation for not taking
care of it's plants !..
Cheers....Joe _________________ http://www.publishamerica.com/books/14079

brian, I know this is an old thread but maybe you'll see it. I'm about a half hour north of Philly and I saw multiple varieties of citrus at the Lowe's in Neshaminy in 2006, then never saw them again. If you're familiar with the Feasterville area at all Feeney's has just gotten several different varieties of lemon and lime trees, and have now even started selling banana trees. This is the first time I have seen local citrus/tropical trees since seeing them at Lowes in '06. I guess around here it's just right place/right time. |

2006 was that last year Florida was allowed to ship citrus trees out of state. Most came from Record Buck Farms. Our Lowes used to have hundreds of them as well. Most trees you see now will be coming from CA. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

I just saw this thread was active again... I haven't been up that way in a long time but I will have to start calling them to ask every spring because if they are coming from the same place as these lemons I want more. They are extremely healthy and green. The only other source of citrus I can find in this area is an exotic plants shop that has huge markups and poorly maintained citrus trees.
I have ordered from fourwinds with good success but it is pricey to ship from CA to PA. I thought about buying a liter of rootstock seeds and trying my hand at grafting, but I am impatient. I'm trying to find some more kumquats, they are delicious.
Thanks for the info. |
