I was talking to Stan McKenzie a few months back and he advised that Professor Croxton had passed away. His grapefruit tree will be his lasting legacy.

I have a small "Croxton" grapefruit which seems to be doing well in a pot. I'm tempted to plant in the ground inside a yet to be purchased greenhouse .

Greg you are going to want to make sure it is in a greenhouse. One reason why you don't see many of the red grapefruit come out of CA is that they need a lot of heat to sweeten up. In your location you are going to want to give it as much heat as possible.

Citrumelo for zone 6 to 5 is not realistic. I don't even believe in zone 7a. Even in zone 7b Citrumelo needs protection.

Roberto

several of us here in the Maryland, VA suburbs of Washington DC have planted citrumelos in 2006 or so. Most have seen near 0f and in single digits several times during that time, no loss yet. Some defoliation, butg all leafed back out. Waiting for blooms and fruit. Seems very tough for us , no problems. We are a solid zone 7a.

you really get to 0, or 5f there? In Maryland?

Laaz, the Oro Blanco hybrid does "well" in a cold frame on Vancouver Island.
Did you meet Bob Duncan at the 2011 citrus expo? He has had success with that variety but I don't know anyone who has tried a real grapefruit this far north.

Greg I didn't go to the 2011 expo. You may want to also try the Cocktail grapefruit.
