I just ordered 5 Chinese Praying Mantis egg sacks from ebay. I paid $13.00 total including S&H, and insurance(my choice). They say that they are freshly picked and have never been subjected to artificial temperatures such as a refrigerator or freezer and that the egg cases are naturally stored in the outdoors of Ohio.
As for the Lady Bugs, they are cheaper at March Biological, at least for 1500 of them. I haven ot ordered any (yet, we'll see).
Wish me luck. Now all I have to do is keep spraying them off and hope that my new friends get here quick and hatch even quicker.
Any further advise is very welcome.
Thank you, again. _________________ Disneygirl |

Well, My egg sacks should arrive tomorrow and I hope they hatch REAL quick. I purchased a 10 gallon tank for the eggs when they get here. My tree is starting to show some damage even thogh there are about 10-20 (that I can see). So far I have not found any eggs that they may have layed. I inspected every leaf, top and bottom today, but that doesn't mean that there won't be any there tommorow.
I'm not sure if I should get any Lady bugs. Does anyone know if they will help?

HUGS Disney Um i looked at the list i got of what lady bugs will and wont eat and that one is Iffy.. the Praying mantis will destroy them though ..
i no longer need food for my mantis and bought another 10 egg sacks since now everyone in my neighbor hood wants to go organit ..90% of them are on Oxegine or medicare LOL .. then there are us 10% who actually help out with the 90% ..
Ive been known to go 1 block to pick up a quarter Mr jenkins dropped LOL Tammy _________________ If it breaths and loves life Im a Friend..

Thanks. I was reading how to recapture ladybugs and thought that I will use that tech. for catching food for the mantis. Hopefully it will work. It said to take a nylon stocking and place it over the end of the vaccuum hose so you can vaccuum them up and the bugs won't get killed. So since I have an outside plug at my back patio and there are always tons of bugs (especially since I have the plant lights on till 11 pm) it shouldn't be a problem. I will just have to be sure to leave some for the toads. They are always at least 5 of them out there, not including the tree frogs that take up residence on the top of my sliding glass doors near the flood lights.
Thanks again. _________________ Disneygirl |

O.K. I received me egg sacks today and the guy sent me 7 of them (yippee 2 extra).
Hey Westwood, what do I do to help them hatch? I figured that I would tape them to the side of the tank and have them near the plant lights for warmth, but I'm just guessing at what to do.

what i do is grab string and make a loop knot like your gonna start making a crochey line then put it around the egg top.. about 6-7 inches from the bottom how warm is your house 70 degrees for 20 days there hatched have a little moisture in the tank i spray just a mist in the walls for the moisture have the top on and wait when they hatch have some small bugs .. Flightless fruit flys ( off Aquabid) works well .. only like 7 bucks total and she is in your area too .. Misty i think is her name on there but look up live food get them befor they hatch you can put in 1 or 2 of the coffee pot deals have small cuttings of rose plants in there and they can get the water from the food Or as jerry said put in a damp cloth for moisture... all of my new ones are in the gh or the back yard and 2 in a tank ben for hatching since the 2 i was going to send you are Now not needed i am giving thm to a kindergarden class ..Tammy

I'm the same way. Kids, animals, plants. I volunteer at my kids school most school days full time with my youngest son (just turned 3). That little boy runs the front office, and 2 class rooms, it's hysterical.
I will get some flightless fruit flys. How do you keep them?
I have put 2 egg sacks in the tank and the rest in a bag taped to the inside of my fridge. On the bottom of the tank I put 2 (atttached) pieces of paper towel and then I folded another and soaked that and put it into a tiny glass bowl in the corner of the tank. I also covered 2/3 of the screened cover with a placemat. The tank is resting one side against the heating pad that has the seedlings to be on it.

Well the last couple of days I have only found 2-3 of them. I am still hosing off the tree 3x daily. Thankfully it has been VERY hot here so I have not had to worry about my tree in regards to all that water it has been getting from hosing the buggers off. My lawn is pretty much brown and I water my flowers and other plants everyday morning very well and by the time night comes they are wilting, so I water them again at night. They look great each morning though. Looking forward to atleast a little bit of rain.
None of my egg sacks have hatched yet. O.K. so I am a little bit anxious, but can you blame me. The are hanging pretty in the tank and a small bowl with a folded up soaked paper towel inside and the tank is sitting on a heating pad set on low.
