Once again this year my citrus trees are infested with leaf miners despite my attempts to squash their outbreaks with Spinosad and systemic pesticides on non-bearing trees. I was reading through my latest issue of California Gardener and saw that they have pheromone traps produced by ISCA Technologies.

Here's a link to their data sheet:

Phillip,

John Panzarella uses these traps at his house in Lake Jackson. Here is a link to his website where he discusses the traps.

I sent the company an email earlier this year and never heard back from them. Where can you get the traps and how much do they cost?

They have an online order form that doesn't work, but their excel form seems to work. Since California Gardener is published from Armstrong Gardens, I wonder if they have it in stock. I'm burning daylight today, but maybe tomorrow I'll drive down there to see if they have it.

In reading some of the data, it appears that the traps won't stop the problem alone since it only kills the males, but maybe slow things down???

Here's the link to their order form:

I happened to make it to Armstrong Nursery tonight at they had the pheromone trap. It was a bit pricey but they always tend to be on the high side. It was $29, but I had a gift card left over from last Christmas so I went ahead and decided to try it. I don't have much time left in their active season, but we'll see how things go.

I did a Google search for Mosquito Hotel, but didn't find anything. Do you have a link for what one looks like?

Thanks. Pretty neat contraptions. I almost wish we had more mosquitoes here so I could get one to try out. I liked the low tech device on your last link. They had another link showing the instructions on how to make the mosquito catcher out of a 2 liter bottle: http://www.neatorama.com/2006/05/31/diy-mosquito-trap/

After reading that the traps do not control ACM, it only tells you when to spray-- I don't think I need one. I know when to spray-- anytime there is new growth after the first new growth of the year.

My biggest problem is with rain that can be almost every day in parts of the summer--it washes off the oil or spinosad. The second biggest problem is our heat-- sometimes during the summer we do not go below 85 even at night--but I can still use spinosad then.

I would emphasize the word "almost" when I said "I ALMOST wish we had more mosquitos . . ." Smile

I've been using a bug zapper to catch the moths for the tomato pinworm, and it seems to be working. I also have a dwarf lime tree (in container) about 15 feet away, infected with leaf miners, but I can't tell if the zapper is attracting the leaf miner moths. I've seen some very small ones flitting around the lime tree, would those be the leaf miner ones. They may be too small to notice in the bug zapper, but I don't have the impression they are attracted over to it.

I've also placed the bug zapper next to the lime tree, but still not seeing any small moths trying to get in. Has anyone else tried this and had good results?

The CLM moth is about the size of white flies--only 1-2 mm (less that 1/8th inch).

Phillip, I am going to try that low tech mosquito trap-- I will let you know how well it works -- it could be a good source of fertilizer!
