Thx Laaz!
Yes it looks similar to Ponderosa but the taste of Imperial Lemon is worse, its more ornamental citrus but it looks good! First reaction when somebody sees the huge lemon says whoooaaauuu, thats so big! |
Karoly, very nice greenhouse and trees you have. I read on a French citrus forum that the Imperial Lipo lemon is just another name for the Ponderosa lemon. You say they taste different, do you grow both Lipo and Ponderosa to compare? Can you describe the taste of both in more detail. Are there any other differences that confirm they are two different varieties instead of being the same variety? I've seen the Lipo lemon for sale in the UK and was thinking about buying one. |

Im growing just Lipo and the only reason is because was a gift from a friend to my daughter when she was born, so its not my tree.
A good friend of mine has both variety and he shares with me the difference. Lipo its a bit bitter and doesnt have lemon aroma as much as Ponderosa. The Ponderosa fruit rind its thinner than Lipo. Last year I have tried Lipo but to be honest I cant remember the taste.
Here is a link with citrus variety of the world where you can see that we are talking about two different variety http://users.kymp.net/citruspages/citrusoftheworld.pdf
Ponderosa Citrus Pyritormis Hassk. American Wonder
Lipo - Citrus Lumia Risso&Poit. Lipo
As far as I know but I'm could be wrong:
Ponderosa = C. Lemon x C. Medica
Lipo = C. Lemon x C. Grandis

I always thought that Lipo was a French short for Limon Ponderosa... _________________ - Marc

Thanks Karoly that was very informative.
I will probably still buy one in the future but it is now a lower priority if the fruit doesn't taste that great. |

In the mean time could be the short of Limon x Pomelo. |
