Darkman,

All in all, my barriers were probably 10 inches deep. I think installing barriers less than 2ft deep (at least) to discourage encroaching oak trees is an exercise in futility.

I would have rented a trencher and installed a deep root barrier if it was a possibility - in my case this was an impossibility.

I agree you need at least two feet maybe three and it probably needs to be three inches thick if you are doing concrete. You definitely need a wire mesh to stop or reduce cracking. Wouldn't be a bad idea to bury a pipe on the backside with weep holes in the bottom. Then you could periodically flood it with a herbicide.
