Thought I posted this last night but it's not here. Click on 'Pine Island Nursery" 9th link down - has pics of diff kinds including my yellow (at bottom of page). The guy I bought my red from, William Chow emailed me that it's Vietnames with white pulp. Now, I know what I have!

tammy, hard to tell from pics, but how big is your dragon fruit?

I measured mine todat, the longest brach, arm from where it attaches to the main truck (main trunk is 4-5" above ground) is 11" there are several other arms from 2" - 7" and there are several little buds forming on each of the big arms for more arms. theres this one bud thats just not growing fast like the others ... thinking maybe its the start of a blossom. I'd like to hope, but not breath holding.

Be great if you were able to get fruit!!! love to see pics as the flower turns to fruit and a few stages of the fruit growing... be nice to know what to look for. I know.. I ask a lot!

I have a weird question I think anyways. My dragon fruit has been doing something really weird... 6 different times now.

Not sure how to explain it, so bare with me. I tried taking a pic, but it just doesn't show right. I'm not sure if its my dragon trying to flower and its just too pathetic at it or what. what its doing is in various places, on the smooth part of the arms, not where the pickles are... it shoots out a long white root like thing. its tiny, bright white and about 1 inch long and the tip is bright red. I had some before and they oly got to maybe 1/4" these are growing much longer. not sure what it is pretty much looks like a tiny little worm or root with a red tip.

ANY clue what I'm talking about??? could this be turning into blooms? *please say yes!!!*

I keep trying to take pics and you just cant see it. The weirdest thing, just went and looked, there are 2 more little 'worms' trying to poke out, but this time, they have yellow tips rather than the red.

I really hope it IS trying to flower. even if fruit doesn't happen, be great to see what the flowers look like.

I'm just using my web cam to take pics. my digital died. waiting for my dad to go to minnesota next month, then plan on buying his cam. his is a reallllly fancy digital.. just cant wait to get it!

I joined the yahoo group, was going to just read through the past messages, see if anything pops up before posting and asking a question.

It does sound funny describing them as 'worms' but thats what they look like, skinny lirttle maggot like things. gross, but worth it if I get flowers! I know mines not to the 'fruiting' size yet, so who knows.

Hey you 2!
Tammy, nice pics with your new cam!!! Remember you posted your first pics of your D Fruit?.. & I said they look like new blooms...and now THEY ARE. I sure hope they fruit for you!! Even if they don't, the flowers are nice.
I tried getting on that yahoo forum/link - whatever, & it won't let me read.. I am yahoo but I guess I gotta sign up somehow. Would love to read that! Hey Tam, I will email you about our trade Laughing . I got your PM & just too busy to answer...maybe tomorrow!? I got your figgies rooting & about ready to go. Started a D fruit cutting too.. you told me how.
Betty, those worm-like things are roots. All roots are 'wormy' looking. Blossoms don't start out that skinny.. more like fat buds. Cactus sometimes throw roots out above ground-- like orchids. Mine also have some worm-like roots growing out. They are just roots...doesn't matter what color tips are.
Hope you read up on the site I posted...all good stuff & great pics.

Shucks. I really was hoping. Oh well. Does it hurt to remove the above ground roots or? weird that they grow so far above ground.

thanks fo your answer though. I didn't think it would be the start of a bloom but... kinda cool to hope.

lots of learning to do. crazy how the more you learn the less you find out you really know

DON'T REMOVE ANY ROOTS ABOVE OR BELOW GROUND.
Why would you even want to?????
It's not 'weird' that roots grow above ground...it's normal.

Im with Patty on the roots..
If the plant Didn need them there they wouldnt make them..

can your plant get enough air ? might be smothering roots below that cant get air so survival of the plant is making new roots so it can breath.. thats just a thought mbut remember i could be way wrong but no matter what dont cut them like i said if it didnt need them there they wouldnt be .. mine is in a very light soil..Tammy

We have hair growing out of our head don't we? We are well above ground. Pull those off too?
Those roots are looking for more nutrition in the air. What do you say about orchids with roots growing upwards & out????? Or, I s'pose, you don't know about orchids.
