My grafts have taken off and I am excited for my multi year wait. I know some (MrTexas) were growing these but hadn't gotten fruit yet. Curious if there'd been any changes since checking in last... Thanks! |

I have 4 nice, large, plump Valentine pummelos getting ready to be picked in about 2 to 4 weeks. I'll let you know how they taste. Pretty excited about this nice pummelo. _________________ Patty S.

I noticed a few weeks ago that Logee's website was advertising Valentine's as part of their 'new for 2012' section but just checked again a little bit ago and they are not there anymore. Maybe they'll be offering them later in the year. |

Haven't picked them, yet, Marc I will probably start picking one today, and I'll let you know! I did have some at UC Riverside when I went to the Citrus Tour of the UCR Citrus Variety Collection, and again, got to taste them a couple of weeks later (and they were even better) during our citrus class at UCR Extension. They are very good! Very interesting and different than any other pummelo hybrid. They really have a distinct blood orange taste, as well as the sweet pummelo flavor. Definitely worth having in a collection. Sweet, but not insipidly so. And surprisingly well pigmented, considering we did not have the coldest winter going this year. Some were more pigmented than others, and I suspect those were fruits probably picked on the north side of the tree. Durling's also propagates Valentines, so you can check with Durling's to see if they supply trees in your area (besides Logee's). _________________ Patty S.

Logees doesn't ship to my area. I can't seem to find a web site of Durling's... _________________ - Marc |

I don't believe any nursery in the US will ship to Belgium. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

Even if they did, I wouldn't order a plant from overseas. It might not survive the transport... _________________ - Marc |

Marc, Durling's doesn't have a web site. Their phone number is (760) 728-9572. They are located in California. You might want to contact them about whether or not they are able to ship abroad. Pretty sure no one can ship overseas from the USA, though.
And, here are some photos of my first Valentine pummelo. I stuck it on top of my bowl of Bearss limes for size comparison (and to show off the pretty Bearss limes, of course!)
Very nicely pigmented for a rather warmish winter. And, you can see one of the reasons why it got named, "Valentine", besides being ready around Valentine's Day - it looks a bit like a heart when cut open I still think it was not quite ready - maybe another 2 weeks or so and it would be a bit sweeter. I'm going to leave the rest on the tree for another couple of weeks, then try, again. Since it has a lot of pummelo in it's lineage, I might need to let the fruit set on the counter for a while, too, so I'm going to try that as well (pick two, eat one right away, let the other sit for a week.) Same taste I experienced at UC Riverside- heavy on the blood orange berry/wine taste with a sweet pummelo after taste. Very nice! _________________ Patty S.

Valentine is called a pummelo by many people on this and other forums, but its pummelo heritage is not all that large, as it is actually a three way cross. Valentine is made up of the following hybrid crosses... ....Siamese Sweet pummelo x (Dancy mandarin x Ruby blood orange). These selections (minus the pigmentation) were also part of the crosses that developed Melogold and Oroblanco. I received Valentine budwood from a thoughtful member of this forum, which I grafted it onto a Chancellor pummelo that I have grown for years, which itself is already a pink fleshed pummelo. - Millet (335 ABo-) |

True, Millet. I should have been more descriptive. It's a "pummelo hybrid", and not just a pummelo. But, for me, the taste is mainly blood orange and pummelo. Not so much the Dancy at all. How are your Valentine's coming out this year? Have you gotten any fruit, yet? I'm very surprised that my fruit is as good as it is, since this is just the first year's fruit. Patty, the Chandler Pink Pummelo that I grafted the Valentine budwood onto is an eight year old tree. However, I only received the Valentine budwood, several weeks ago. Therefore, the Valentine graft will not produce blooms until next spring. Glad your tree is doing well. The best. - Millet (335 ABo-) |

Oh gosh, brand new grafting. Excellent, I think you're going to enjoy this pummelo hybrid, Millet. It really does have a very unusual taste that is quite good. _________________ Patty S.
