Saturday I grafted 3 Haas avo budsticks & 2 varieties of loquat.
Thanks to eyecker for sending the scions. I did cleft/wedge graft ... hope they all take! _________________ Patty

Good luck patty, I hope they make it. One question, how are you going to grow those in Wisconsin? |

Thanks..
Same as my citrus, guavas, cherimoyas, figs, bananas, palms etc. LOL
I take 'em out in summer & inside for winter. The 2 Avos & loquat I grew from seed are healthy after 3 years. Most plants go semi dormant because they are in a cool sunroom...temps 40's - 50 at night & high of 60 daytime (when it is real cold out). The loquat did not go dormant but grew slowly all winter...it is about 6ft tall. _________________ Patty

They might. Containers help to keep them smaller. The Avos are OK but that loquat I just potted up into a 6 gal. I trimmed the roots. I have a couple plants in 30 gal pots & I root prune once every yr or 2 to keep them from being rootbound.
Yup, it's more work keeping plants healthy up here.
I have a 14 ft high nanna in a 30 gal pot that will go inground this spring. Won't THAT be fun! I use my dolly a lot. I have about 130 plants to haul out - not all are that big. The nanna will get to it's spot in a skidster bucket. I plan on having a friend videotape me on that one. Should be funny. _________________ Patty

Patty,
I plan to send to you Sir Prize and Reed Avocado scionwood. Do you think there's room for them?
Both the Sir Prize and Reed are one of the best tasting avocadoes, according to Gene Lester.
Regards,
Joe |

Thanks ML, the only kind to buy around here are haas & occasional Reed. Those are the 2 I have growing. I heard of littlecado but don't where to find.
Joe, I have another avo tree ready to graft on. The other has 3 haas grafts on & one scion didn't look good in the center but I'll wait & see. In fact, 2nd is a plant grown from Reed (Florida) that I bought here. They taste good & are HUGE.
Nothing on it but branches to graft on LOL. Lots of room. Looking FWD to Sir Prize...another I never heard of. _________________ Patty

I grafted 5 avocados last fall and 4 of them took. I just plant the seeds directly in the ground. The ones I grafted are cold hardy since we get down to mid 20s most winters. Mrs Holland and Duke are two I can remember. _________________ Skeet

WOOHOO, the Big Jim loquat graft is budding out! Waiting for the other one.
The 3 haas grafts don't look good and on the other avo tree, 3 of 4 look good but not budding yet. The 4 or 5 apple grafts are still green but won't know yet if they took. _________________ Patty

Joe, the 2 honey crisp apples are getting green buds! Looks like a bud starting on winter banana apple from Phillip. Waiting on the rest.
None of the haas avo's took but the others from Joe are still green. On one, the host branch turned dark from the graft & moving towards main trunk. The scion is still green though. Very strange.
Big Jim loquat is leafing out nicely - still wating on McBeth. _________________ Patty

Big Jim is still leafing out & still waiting for McBeth. The Honeycrisp apple is also leafing out!! yippee
Skeet, what kind of graft did you do your avos? Mine are still green but doing nothing. I did wedge grafts on them.
Joe - HELP! I have 2 branches of one variety on apple tree that had blossoms last year. This year nothing & one branch looks dead 3/4 of way up to tip - one side is still a little green but other is brown & dead. No leaves there. Unfortunately I grafted Phillips Winter Banana to it. The scion is still alive but not budding. Should I cut it off & regraft it to another branch? I hope it's not too late to save it...is it possible? _________________ Patty

I did cleft graft on 4 (probably what you call wedge graft)--all but 1 took. I did one T-bud on the biggest tree--it has 2 grafts--one Cleft up high (about 18 inches) and one T-bud just a couple inches above ground. Dr. Manners told me the best time to graft Avocados is in the fall when temps are cool--for him that is usually Nov, for me it was Oct, for you it may be Sept. I tried Nov the year before and had no luck at all. _________________ Skeet
