Hi Everyone.

Darren suggested this forum to me and this is my first posting.

My Mom has an orange tree and I would like to grow my own from hers as it is a beautiful tree and its fruit is delicious. She has no idea what kind of orange tree it is, it came with the house she bought in 2005. What do I do to accomplish this? I have been a Citrus Mom for 2 months Drogar-Glad(LBG) and I
LOVE every minute of it. I watch daily changes on my first baby (a valencia orange purchased on 1-25-06) and it's beautiful.

Your time and assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Disneygirl,
You can take cuttings and root them or if you have rootstock available
you can bud them or you could graft them or it may be possible for you to cut off budwood and get a local nursery to do it for you, for a fee of course. I'm not sure if there is a optimal time to takea cutting but I imagine if the tree is not dormant then it should work. Also you could Airlayer a cutting and there is a threat about it, Marcotting I think is the title. I hope I haven't left anything out.
Sincerely,
James

The best thing to do is find out the variety and buy a budded tree of the same variety. Under Florida law, you cannot propagate it yourself, until/unless you have the tree inspected and certified free of several diseases, and you are licensed as a citrus nurseryman (yes, even if you want to make just one tree). The reason for this rather draconian set of rules is to try to slow the spread of several diseasses (greening, canker, tristeza) and pests that are devastating to citrus.

Tammy - I purchased my tree at Wal-Mart.

Gentleman - Thank you.

Now my next question's are:

1. How and where do I make the cutting?

2. I know what grafting is eventhough I do not know how to do it yet, and I am looking forward to doing this as I would like to have a multi-citrus tree. Very Happy My question is what is budding?

3. How do you root a cutting?

As for the inspection. The USDA was recently at my Mom's place and they inspected the tree. There is a tag in which they have on the tree, that is unlawful to remove.

Thank you

The inspection tag you have is for the canker program. That's a totally different thing from inspection for certification of a registered budwood source.

Certainly, you can (and many do) bud trees without going through the red tape. But technically it is against state law, and if the canker inspectors do come around and find uncertified trees, they can destroy them and fine you.
