I have a Mexican friend Louis who I met when he came to buy citrus trees from me. He speaks only halting english. He says his english is not too good because he always has worked with Mexicans. Nice fellow though.

He usually brings me tamales at Christmas time but this year his wife injured her rotator cuff from how he describes the surgery she had so no tamales.

He brought what he calls "punch" to me yesterday. Funny punch! It is like mulled cider to me and is served hot. It has about half cooked cut up fruit and crushed sugar cane in it. It has golden apples, guava, and something I can't ID:

What fruit is it????

The fruit has 3 or 4 largish seeds in it and looks like a crabapple. Quince maybe? The taste is not sweet with a rubbery consistency. Well, not like I can really ask Louis what it is as he probably doesn't know the English word for it.

Louis is a very nice fellow. I have met his family as well and been at his house. He two kids speak perfect english but were born in Mexico. He has been here more than 10 years and I suspect he is illegal. He works in a local foundry as a pattern maker. I told him I was selling out my citrus trees and he has brought over about a dozen co-workers to buy some from me. Louis has made me think about the status of illegals here in a pretty sympathetic way. He has several siblings that also live here. His boy has opened an auto repair shop here and his daughter just graduated from college. Surely the plan can't be to kick out successful illegals like Louis? Too late IMHO.

That is it! I'm sure Louis was saying ponche which I took to mean punch.

Tejocotes (pronounced te-hoe-coe-tes) are the fruit of the Hawthorne tree which were originally only grown in Mexico. They look a bit like a golden yellow crab apple, between 1 ½” to 2’ in diameter, and they have a sweet-sour flavor. Tejocotes are an indispensable ingredient in Ponche Navideno

Ponche Navideño
Serves 10 to 15

8-10 quarts water
8 to 10 tejocotes
6 guavas, halved
2 pounds sugar cane, peeled and cut into 1" chunks
1/2 pound prunes without pits
2 pears, peeled and cut into chunks
4 oranges, sliced in thin rounds
1/4 pound seedless raisins
1 1/2 teaspoon whole cloves
2 Mexican cinnamon sticks
2 pounds piloncillo (Mexican brown sugar cones)
2 quarts hot water, for soaking tejocotes

Soak the tejocotes in hot water for one hour. Drain. Peel them and cut them in quarters, removing the seeds.

In a large pot, bring 8 to 10 quarts of water to a full boil. Reduce the heat to simmer.

Add all ingredients and simmer for about 1.5 hours.

Serve with plenty of fruit in each mug. Add a shot of rum, tequila, or brandy to each serving, if desired.
