i bought several multi-variety trees last year. several of them have one of the varieties that just is not growing as vigorous as the others. is there some way to promote a branch to grow more than it would normally grow?

i remember my parent buying a five in one apple tree. all but two of the types died. not sure why. the branch varieties died and there was a dead streak all the way down to the roots.
