My husband John and I spent a couple hours with Stan McKenzie today. He gave us a walking tour of his place, sharing samples of citrus and figs. He gave me a bag of fresh bush green beans which I promptly prepared upon arriving home. Yummy!
I took home a Croxton grapefruit, Juanita tangerine, Owari satsuma, and a Meiwa kumquat tree. To top it off, I bought ten Swingle rootstock. He threw in a Pineapple guava for a gift. Wow! Many thanks Stan. I'll keep Bloomsweet grapefruit and Kimbrough satsuma on my list, maybe you'll have them next visit.
He gave a demonstration of his grafting technique putting an Owari onto Swingle. What a confidence booster that was! I've grafted roses successfully before, but have yet to graft citrus. This seemed no different in technique that what I was used to using with roses.
He had the Swingle in tree cups and I potted them up to 1 gal. this afternoon. They were well rooted and I was really pleased with the quality of them.
For those of you planning to attend the Citrus Expo this Nov., do plan on visiting with Stan. He is a most gracious host.
I look forward to seeing everyone Friday evening at the restaurant for the Expo. (other plans, can't attend Saturday)
