after watering my many seedlings, the realization sank in. What the heck am I going to do with 6 white sapote and 1 yellow sapote seedlings? I already have a grafted Vernon in the ground. The most vigorous of the seedlings will become a future rootstock, we will probably move homes within the next 5-10 years. I also have 7 sapodilla seedlings, 5 cherimoya, 10 red sugar apples. Considering they go into the greenhouse over winter, who needs that many?
My thoughts were, when the trees are older, in addition to known cultivars, graft one branch from each white and yellow sapote seedlings onto one rootstock. This would allow me to try all the seedling genetics without having to grow multiple trees. The leftover rootstocks could be grafted over with known type and sold or traded. The idea could then be adapted to my other trees.
Is there a downside to this idea? It would sure free up alot of greenhouse space during winter if it worked. Not to mention all the fun I could have coming up with names for the new cvs.
thanks,
