...and here goes yet another fertiliser question!

During normal growing season, I'm using a fertiliser that is a close match to what most of us consider the right NPK ratio for container citrus. But I read once (on another forum) that, near the end of the growing season, it is better to change the ratio to prepare the plants for dormacy by reducing the amount of N in the fertiliser.

Should I stick to what I'm using now or is it indeed better to change the ratio? What ratio would be good in that case (and how much)?

And please, no fights about what's right and what's not! Wink I just want a useful answer...

I haven't seen any mites on my plants for several weeks now! I'm happy for that! Very Happy Just used soapy water to get rid of them.

Marc, the amount of fertilizer, and how often it is applied all depends on the amount of light, and heat your trees receive during the winter months. My trees are grown in a greenhouse through the winter, and therefore they receive the same fertilizer program year around. Many of my trees produce 5 growth flushes per year. - Millet (884-)

I don't have a greenhouse but I will take the plants inside during winter. Temperature will go down to a minimum of, say, 7..8°C (about 45°F) but can go up to 20°C (68°F) on sunny days. The amount of light will of course be lower.

Your trees will be dormant, but no risk of freezing, so no need to change formula--just decrease fertilization.

Thanks!

Decreasing fertilization - would that be like halving the amount of fertiliser? I now fertilise 250ppm with every watering.

In THIS thread is recommended if your trees are kept cooler for spring bloom, they should be fertilized half the amount. So if you're fertilizing at 250 ppm, then during winter you should fertilize at 125 ppm every watering.

Though what is better: fertilizer every second watering at 250 ppm N, or every watering at 125 ppm?
