Being a noob, I don't have access to Flying Dragon seeds or seedlings. But I do have a mature Yuzu I got from Four Winds that has plenty of flowers this season. From what I've been able to read up on, Yuzu should come true from seed and I have come across literature that stated they were used in asia as rootstock. Do you guys think Yuzu would make decent root stock? I live in SoCal USDA9b if that makes any difference.
Thanks. |

Three or four years ago, Bonnie (Buddinman2) came to my place in Colorado and put on a budding and grafting school. We used many different rootstocks, just whatever was available. Several of the root stocks used were Yuzu. The Satsumas that were budded on Yuzu are now 4 years old and doing just fine. In my estimation, Yuzu makes a good stock. - Millet (682-) |

Thanks for the quick response guys. Just out of curiosity, how long do you think the seedlings need to grow to get to a graftable diameter? |

Generally to about the diameter of a pencil, unless you are exceptional at micro-budding/grafting, - Millet (681-) |

Yes about a year. I can get them there in about 6 months with heavy fertilization in my hot & humid climate. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

I've got a ton of Sudachi seedlings thanks to a forum member. I'm wondering if Sudachi has the same rootstock qualities as Yuzu? |

I'm trying Yuzu & Sudachi as rootstock for Eureka. I budded a BUNCH of Eureka to trifoliata & swingle & every bud failed. I remember reading in the past that Eureka is not compatible with trifoliata & this pretty much confirms it. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...

Laaz, you only have been unlucky. Eureka is very easy to graft on PT.
And when they speak of incompatibility it is for commercial groves because some of the trees will live less long. That's all.
But for most of us 30 years in place of 45 years makes no difference. |

Sylvain, this is the third budding I have done this spring with variegated Eureka lemon to both trifoliata & swingle. Every single one has failed. Satsumas & just about everything else I have budded to the same stock has had almost 100% take. _________________ Wal-Mart a great place to buy cheap plastic crap ! http://walmartwatch.com/ ...
